Matt Aguero guides Oklahoma City University's men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs as head coach.

In 2016-17, Oklahoma City finished as runner-up in the NAIA women's indoor track & field championships, winning the 3,200-meter relay and the distance medley relay titles. Aminat Olowora took mile and 3,000-meter national titles to gain the most valuable performer award. OCU’s eight individuals took 13 all-American honors.

In cross country, the Stars captured the Sooner Athletic Conference women’s cross country championship led by Olowora, who became the SAC and NAIA individual champion. Olowora set the NAIA Championships meet record. In the NAIA outdoor championships, Michaela Werner won the individual marathon title. Aguero garnered both USTFCCCA South Central Region and SAC women's cross country coach of the year.

Aguero had helped the Stars win the two NAIA men’s cross country championships as an assistant coach. From 2014-16, Aguero helped the Stars win two SAC men’s cross country titles and the 2015 SAC women’s cross country crown.

With OCU, Aguero has aided in producing nine men’s all-Americans, three women’s all-Americans, 18 men’s all-conference runners and 17 women’s all-SAC performers in cross country. In track, Aguero coached 13 men’s indoor all-Americans, 21 women’s indoor all-Americans, nine men’s outdoor all-Americans, five women’s outdoor all-Americans and the 2016 indoor national champion distance medley relay team. The Stars’ Arya Bahreini became a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials marathon and a three-time NAIA marathon champion.

Aguero has nine years of experience as a head coach at St. Gregory’s and Cameron. Aguero has coached 19 individual national champions, 86 all-Americans, 165 national meet qualifiers and 113 all-conference performers in his coaching career.

Aguero’s coaching career began in 2004-05 as an assistant at Virginia Intermont. Aguero helped Virginia Intermont to the 2004 NAIA men’s cross country championship. Aguero is a USA Track and Field level I and II certified coach.

Aguero has ran more than 30 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and the New York City Marathon. He won the 2005 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

During his college career, Aguero became an NAIA all-American while competing for Minot State (N.D.), setting the school record in the marathon. Aguero also set the East Central marathon record while becoming an all-region cross country runner and three-time national track and field meet qualifier.
Originally from Poteau, Okla., Aguero entered the Poteau High School athletics hall of fame after setting the 1,600-meter and 5,000-meter school records.
