HOBBS, N.M. – Logan Allen and Taylor Tevis buried birdie putts on the first hole of a playoff to give 10th-ranked Oklahoma City and victory over No. 5 Texas Wesleyan at the Battling in the Desert Tournament on Tuesday.
Texas Wesleyan made up eight strokes in the final round to force the playoff, which started on the 16th hole. That was a fortunate starting point for the Stars, who had three birdies on that par-5 during the regulation third round.
Allen won the individual title at one over par with rounds of 75, 68 and 74. She had birdies on holes six, 13 and 16 on Tuesday to bring her total to 12.
Klaudie Karnikova took fourth to make the All-Tournament team at seven over par with rounds of 74, 73 and 76. Her final-round birdies on 16 and 17 brought her tournament total to eight.
"I am happy with how our team performed under pressure," said OCU Head Coach Josh Gorzney. "Two birdies in the playoff was awesome to see when we've never been in that situation. Very proud of Logan securing her first official collegiate win along with Klaudie getting All Tournament team. Our two seniors showed up and showed out!"
Tevis tied for 10th, going 78-76-74 for 12 over par. She had birdies on holes seven, 13 and 17 on Tuesday to bring her total to nine.
Beatriz Pinheiro birdied the 16th and 18th holes on Tuesday and finished 13th after rounds of 73, 74 and 83. She ended the week with 10 birdies.
Paula Ortiz was 21st at 21 over par after a round 83 on Tuesday, which included a birdie on the fourth hole. She ended up with four birdies for the tournament.
The Stars finished the final 18 holes of regulation at 19 over par for the day and 33 over for the tournament.
OCU returns to action on Oct. 13-14 when they wrap up the fall season in The Battle at Winter Creek in Blanchard.
