Okla. City Earns Conference Win in Shutout Fashion

OKLAHOMA CITY – The overpowering offensive attack and relentlessly hounding defense of Oklahoma City University women's soccer proved to be too much for the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Monday afternoon. Okla. City remains undefeated in 2025 with an 8-0-2 record and earned its first conference win of the season. The 8-0-2 start for the Stars is the best 10-game start to a season the program has achieved since 2005, when OCU went 10-0-1 to begin the season. Coach Billy Martin's team took advantage of opportunities created by OPSU losing two players due to multiple card infractions. Junior Kayleigh Haygood netted three goals to record her first collegiate hat-trick, ultimately propelling the Stars' offense to success.

How It Happened
Stifling defense and ample shot opportunities drove the success wagon for OCU on Monday. The Stars held the Aggies to a lone shot in the first half of play while the OCU offense received two goals from Rose State transfer and Edmond native Haygood. Abby Russell assisted the Junior's first goal of the opening half at the 13-minute mark. Less than 10 minutes later, Reese Roberts connected on a corner kick that led to Haygood's second goal of the contest and half. The Stars earned five more corner kicks than OPSU in the first half of play.

During the second half, OCU received a jolt out of intermission when Haygood once again found the net on a Roberts assist. The third goal of the contest for Haygood came 15 minutes into the second half. Nearly 20 minutes later, Saizlee Carlton's patience in the box was rewarded when a loose ball near the six found her foot for an accurate strike, extending the Stars' lead to four goals.

The icing on the proverbial cake came when Yami Ponce lined up a dead strike penalty kick for her 10th goal of 2025. Ponce's goal came with just nine minutes left in regulation and after multiple OPSU players were ejected after receiving a red card and two yellow cards respectively in the second half. Goalkeeper Gemma Harvey played the second half between the posts for OCU and assisted Candela Blanco in securing the Stars' clean sheet.

By the Numbers
Okla. City has pitched six shutouts in 2025 and has not allowed a team to score multiple goals in a match this season. Overpowering offense is commonplace for the Stars, seeing as they have outscored opponents 56-4 and only allow 0.40 goals per contest. OCU has created 102 more shots on goal than the opposing teams have against the Stars' defense. Blitzkrieg is the only suitable adjective to describe the offense of OCU; the Stars produce 20.3 more shots per game than their opponents. The Stars also hold the immense corner kick advantage, doubling the number of foes' attempts.

Chatting with Coach
After the game, Coach Martin shared insight on how the team played Monday's match with only one day of rest and how that did not stop them from playing a physical style of game. Martin on the second-half surge from his team, "I guess we are a second-half team. The girls came out after halftime playing with a sense of urgency, and it showed.

Game Notes
  • All fives; OCU has won five matches by at least five goals in 2025.
  • The Stars now have two goal-scorers in double digits; Ponce and Horsford are tied atop the Sooner Athletic Conference for most goals scored.
  • Okla. City recorded a season-high 12 corner kicks attempted against OPSU.

What's on the Radar
OCU will take short, in-state road trips to Bethany and Chickasha for the next two matches; first against Southwestern Christian University on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. and secondly against Science and Arts on Oct. 7 at 5 p.m..
