BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Tex— Oklahoma City University women's golfer Jamie Welsh was granted an invitation for an individual spot to play in Texas A&M's tournament named after her late Aunt, Mo Welsh. Welsh is a multi-year women's golf team member and a senior at OCU. Jamie has also been accepted into the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. The on-campus golf course, Traditions Club, hosted the event.
The tournament is named after Aggie women's golf great Monica Welsh. Welsh, tragically, died in an automobile accident in 1992. She was a four-year letter winner for the Aggies from 1978 to 1982. She was a two-time Texas All-State Athletics Association selection and set the then-record for the lowest competitive round (68) in 1981 at the TAIAW State Championship. This marks the Maroon & White's 21st time hosting the "Mo".
The Texas A&M Aggies have finished first an event-best seven times, including a tournament-record 25-stroke victory in 1996 and an epic come-from-behind triumph in 2022. In this year's rendition of the tournament, the Aggies proved victorious and dominated the field while finishing a historic 38 shots ahead of the second-place team Northern Colorado.
Welsh finished 50th in the tournament and is currently ranked within the Top-50 of individual golfers in the NAIA rankings.
"Mo is a legacy in so many different ways," Welsh said. "Of course, the golf is one thing, but the way people flocked to her as a person is what this tournament stands for. Seeing the light that the Texas A&M girls bring to the game has been a joy to experience this week."
