Akajia Handsom - 7 PTS, 4 REB, 5-8 FT
FIRST QUARTER: Right out of the gate, Langston's defensive pressure led to a Bryant turnover on the first possession and capitalized immediately with Ruth Sodipe scoring in transition off a Diamond Richardson assist. OCU's
Raegan Travis got an offensive rebound after a missed shot but couldn't convert her putback attempt. The first OCU points came via free throws by Bryant after drawing a foul at the 8:46 mark. After a Langston three-pointer extended the lead,
Cacie Gorman found Travis for OCU's first field goal at 4:34 to make it 20-6. OCU's defense struggled to contain Langston's balanced attack, with Langston knocking down 3-pointers and converting fast breaks off turnovers. The Stars trailed 27-11 at the end of the first.
SECOND QUARTER: The second quarter started with Gordon providing a spark, scoring a tough and-one layup at 9:22. She converted the free throw to cut the deficit to 27-14. But OCU's struggles to hold onto the ball persisted, with turnovers from Gordon and Curry giving Langston extra opportunities. Langston's Diamond Richardson hit a three at 8:19 to push the lead to 30-14. After a Bryant missed jumper, Langston's Koreea Kirksey got out in transition for a fast-break layup. Midway through the quarter, OCU called a timeout down 36-14, looking to regroup. The Stars found some offense late in the half when Bryant hit a floater in the paint, but Langston's lead ballooned to 47-21 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER: Coming out of halftime, OCU continued to fight, led by
Amaya Gordon, who scored a pair of baskets in the paint. However, Langston's quick ball movement and perimeter shooting made it difficult for the Stars to build any real momentum.
Brooke Curry briefly gave OCU life with a corner three at 6:50, cutting it to 36-16. The Stars showed grit defensively, with
Victoria Ososonya swatting a shot and
Raegan Travis grabbing a steal midway through the quarter. But the offensive drought persisted, as OCU's turnovers kept Langston in transition. A late jumper by
Lauren Rowan ended the quarter, but OCU still trailed 69-33 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER: The final period saw OCU playing for pride, with
Akajia Handsom attacking the rim and drawing contact, converting 5 of 8 free throws.
Amanda Sene Da Cruz knocked down a three-pointer at 4:25, and Gorman hit a putback layup off an offensive rebound with just over a minute left. Langston's offense finally cooled off, but the damage was done. Despite flashes of energy from the bench, OCU ultimately fell 78-43.
The loss drops OCU to 10-19 as the 2024-25 campaign comes to and end while Langston improves to 27-2.
