Stars split conference opening doubleheader with SCU

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Baseball team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader split to Southwestern Christian on Saturday afternoon at Putnam City High School.

Game Summary
OCU wasted no time setting the tone, plating two runs in the first inning. SCU answered with a five-run outburst in the top of the third, narrowing the gap to 7-5 before the Stars erupted for five runs, capped by a towering three-run homer from Trent Kiraly, giving OCU a 7-5 lead.

OCU responded promptly with two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Barrett Daniel delivered a clutch performance, driving in four runs with a double and a home run, while Aiden Van Rensum scored three times, contributing a triple and an RBI.

On the mound, Andrew Limbaugh earned the win for the Stars, pitching a complete seven-inning game, allowing 10 hits and six runs while striking out five. SCU's Zach Gaudreau took the loss, surrendering seven runs over 2.2 innings of work.

Game Notes

  • Five Stars tallied multiple base hits while the team hit for the cycle with seven extra base hits. 
  • Trent Kiraly followed up a five-hit game on Monday by going 2-for-2 with four RBI, a double and a home run. Kiraly knocked one out for the second consecutive game while collecting four RBI for the second game in a row. Over the past two games Kiraly has gone 7-for-7 at the dish with two home runs, three doubles, eight RBI and six runs scored. 
  • Barrett Daniel joined Kiraly with his second home run of the season while going 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and a season-high four RBI. Daniel moved his on-base streak to 11 games while claiming his fifth multi-hit game of the year. 
  • Aiden Van Rensum went 2-for-3 with a game-high three runs scored while driving in a run for the second consecutive game. Van Rensum tabbed a triple for the second game in a row after going all last season without a three-bagger.
  • Jeffery Martz moved his on-base streak to six games, second best on the team after putting together his second multi-hit game of the season by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. 
  • Hunter Brown added two hits for the first time this season going 2-for-3 to with an RBI in the third straight game for the OCU backstop. 
  • Andrew Limbaugh went the distance for the Stars fourth complete game by a starter this season joining Jacob Burkett (2) and Tanner Ellis (1). Limbaugh allowed 10 hits while holding Southwestern Christian to six runs earning his first win of the season.

Game Summary
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Southwestern Christian University surged past Oklahoma City University with a 7-3 victory. The Eagles used a decisive four-run fourth inning to take control and never looked back, leveling the weekend series.

The Stars struck first with a solo homer from Hunter Lenochan in the first inning and added single runs in the third and seventh but left 11 runners on base, squandering key opportunities.

SCU overcame the two run deficit with a four-run burst in fourth, highlighted by Dario Paredes' towering two-run homer and a clutch RBI double from Jake Cox.

The Eagles added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to cushion their lead. Braden Browning contributed with an RBI single, while Gregory Berroa drove in a run with a groundout.

Game Notes
  • The loss moves Oklahoma City to 4-2 over its last six games and to 5-7 overall with a 1-1 conference record. 
  • Hunter Lenochan highlighted the Stars with his first three-hit game of the season going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Lenochan's solo blast in the third was his first of the year as the OCU gold glove second baseman has scored and hit safely in three straight games. 
  • Trent Kiraly went 2-for-3 with an RBI to tab his third consecutive game with multiple base hits. 
  • Barrett Daniel saw his on-base streak advance to a team-leading 12th straight game after going 1-for-3 with an RBI and walk as Daniel currently leads the squad in base on balls with nine. 
  • Hunter Brown went 1-for-4 with his first double of the season to move his hitting streak to four games tying Barrett Daniel as the active leader for Oklahoma City. 
  • Tanner Ellis suffered his first loss on the mound this season as the freshman right-hander went 5.1 innings allowing six runs, five earned while striking out just one. 
Next Up
The two teams will face off in the rubber match on Sunday at 2:00 PM on Denney Crabaugh Field at Jim Wade Stadium.
