This Week in OCU Women's Soccer

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City women's soccer plays its final road games of the regular season this week with trips to Wayland Baptist on Tuesday and Central Christian on Saturday.

Tuesday's game begins at 4 p.m. and the Saturday game at 1 p.m.

OCU Notebook
Ten Goals By Three: Three OCU players have 10 or more goals this season –Amelia Horsford (12), Kayleigh Haygood (11) and Yami Ponce (10). They are first, second and third in the SAC. It is the first time since 2012 that OCU has had three players reach double-digits in goals. In 2012, Meghan McMahon had 27, Allison Worsham scored 18 and Sheridan Homer added 12.

On the Road: The Stars are 4-1-1 on the road this season and averaging three goals per game. OCU is outscoring opponents 18-4 and getting 17 shots per game while allowing seven. Yami Ponce and Kayleigh Haygood each have three road goals this season.

Last Game: Oklahoma City shut out Nelson 4-0 on Saturday to improve to 11-1-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in the conference. Amelia Horsford scored two goals and an assist and Kayleigh Haygood and Saizlee Carlton added goals. Carlton and Yami Ponce had assists.

RPI: Oklahoma City isn't in the NAIA Top 25 poll, but that poll no longer carries any weight for the postseason. More importantly, OCU is ranked 20th in RPI with the 48th most difficult schedule in the NAIA. OCU's opponents have a .556 winning percentage and OCU's 11-1-2 record against them has the Stars in position for an at-large berth for the NAIA Tournament if they were to need one.

SAC Standings: OCU stands in second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference, three points behind John Brown. If the Stars win their games this week, they can at least tie the Golden Eagles for first with a win at home against JBU next Tuesday.

The Shut Down: Candela Blanco has a Sooner Athletic Conference-leading eight shutouts this season and also tops the league in save percentage at .854. She is second in the league with her 0.44 goals allowed per game average.

Hat Tricks: The Stars have produced three hat tricks this season, with Kayleigh Haygood getting the latest one with her three goals against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tatum Tallal got one on with three goals against Hesston. Amelia Horsford had a three-goal day in the win over Sterling.

Brace for Impact: Six Stars have recorded a brace this season, including Amelia Horsford (4) and Yami Ponce (3), who have done so a total of seven times. Kayleigh Haygood, Tatum Tallal, Chloi Thurman and Saizlee Carlton have one each.

Assistance: Fourteen Stars have contributed to the team's 42 assists this season. Kayleigh Haygood leads OCU and the Sooner Athletic Conference with eight. Saizlee Carlton has six and is ninth in the SAC Reese Roberts is tied for 10th with five.

Inside the Margins: This season, Oklahoma City boasts the Sooner Athletic Conference's best offensive and defensive numbers. The Stars average 4.57 goals per game while allowing 0.43. OCU obviously also leads in scoring margin at 4.14.

Winning Numbers: The Stars have won every game in which Amelia Horsford has scored a goal. She has a dozen goals in OCU's 11 wins this season with a brace on Saturday for good measure. Yami Ponce has 10 of her goals in the 11 wins. In OCU's 11 wins, opponents have scored a total of two goals and average under four shots per game.

Trending: Over the last three games, both OCU and their opponents have put around 54 percent of their respective shots on goal. The major difference is volume. The Stars are averaging 21 shots and 11 shots on goal per game, compared to 8.7 shots and 4.4 shots on goal per game by their foes. Kayleigh Haygood has three goals over the last three games.

Coach Billy Martin: Since Head Coach Billy Martin took over the women's program in 2000, his Stars are 54-34-9. The 11 wins this season match his best season totals.

History with Wayland Baptist: OCU has won the last four meeting against Wayland Baptist, including a 3-1 win at OCU last season. Abby Russell, Reese Roberts and Amelia Horsford had goals in that win. Camila Zavala scored for the Pioneers. The last OCU trip to Plainview resulted in a 2-0 Stars victory in 2023.

Scouting the Pioneers: Wayland Baptist is 2-11-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the SAC after a 5-1 loss at USAO on Saturday. Ashley Perez leads the Pioneers with five goals.

History with Central Christian: OCU has won the last three matches in the Central Christian series, including a 2-1 win at OCU last year in which Amelia Horsford and Yami Ponce scored goals. Horsford and Abby Russell had goals in OCU's last trip to McPherson, 3-0 win, in 2023.

Looking in on the Tigers: Central Christian is 3-10-2 overall and 1-5 against the SAC. Kaye Harrison leads the Tigers with four goals.
