McSpadden claims 1,900th win, Cornelson deals perfect game in sweep over Tigers

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City softball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon in the conference opener against Central Christian as Phil McSpadden earned win number 1,900 for his 36-year career at the helm for the Stars.

HOW IT HAPPENED       

  Emersen Heron delivered the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to bring home Kaitlyn Jones in the bottom of the first inning.  

Oklahoma City (9-0) then put up eight runs in the bottom of the second inning while sending 12 batters to the plate. Three doubles in the inning led to the Stars taking a 9-0 lead with Baileigh Loux, Tara Hoehner, and Mallory McCoy all getting a two-base knock while driving in a run each. 

OCU went without a run in the next two innings, but it wouldn't matter Stars pitching Shelbey Cornelson shut down Central Christian (4-5) by not allowing a single base runner in the five-inning contest.  

GAME NOTES        

  • Oklahoma City continued its hot streak by advancing to 9-0 with the win over Central. 
  • With the win, the OCU head coach of 36 years and the all-time winningest coach in softball history Phil McSpadden claimed his 1,900th career victory. 
  • Shelbey Cornelson clinched her fifth win of the season as the senior threw a perfect game in what was her fourth complete game this year. Cornelson went five innings without allowing anyone to reach base while striking out a season-high nine batters. 
  • Baileigh Loux advanced her hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-2 day after knocking in an RBI double back in the 2nd. Loux took sole possession of being the team leader in batting average (.563), hits (18), and RBIs (14). 
  • Mallory McCoy joined Loux as the other Star to tally two hits in the game as McCoy made her second start of the season and went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.  
  • Oklahoma City used a bit of small ball to grow its big lead while taking advantage of the running game by stealing seven bases in the game, its most since Apr. 29 against Oklahoma Panhandle State. 
  • Kaitlyn Jones, Kamryn Garvie, and Amy Crabaugh each stole two bags a piece Iliana Ashford stole one which was her team-leading seventh stolen base.

HOW IT HAPPENED        

Once again it was the Stars taking the upper hand early with a run scored in the bottom of the first as Baileigh Loux added another hit to the line to score Radacy and go up 1-0. 

In the third, Oklahoma City (10-0) tacked on two more with a two-run shot over dead center by Kamryn Garvie.  

Central Christian grew very close to scoring on multiple occasions leaving the bases loaded in the third and stranding runners on in the first and fourth innings.  

OCU finally broke through in the fifth inning with its biggest frame of the game, scoring four runs on three hits while taking advantage of two errors by the Tigers. After Kaitlyn Jones started the inning with a single, Rally Radacy ignited the rally with a single to center that brought home Jones from second. 

Loux proceeded to drive in her second run of the game before Tara Hoehner singled to left to bring home two runs in Garvie and Loux.  

Being one run away from the run-rule victory OCU had two on and two out with none other than Loux at the plate with the chance to win it. Loux solidified her three-RBI game by driving in the winning run with a single through the left side to take the game 8-0. 

GAME NOTES        

  • Oklahoma City won its 10th straight game as it aims for its best start since 2022 when the national championship season began at an 18-0 pace. 
  • The top of the Stars order dominated the day as Rally Radacy, Kamryn Garvie, and Baileigh Loux all collected two hits each. 
  • Radacy finished the game going 2-for-3 while scoring three times which brings her season run total to 16, the team's best. 
  • Kamryn Garvie knocked her second home run of the year out to dead center, being the only Star with multiple homers so far. Garvie put together a 2-for-3 day while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.  
  • Baileigh Loux extended her hitting streak to 10 games in a row and made it her seventh game with multiple hits. Loux drove in three RBIs which made her sixth straight game driving in a run. 
  • Brynlee Alsip made her second start of the season and third time inside the circle. Alsip went on to throw six innings without allowing a run, giving up four hits and struck out a season-high nine batters.  
  • Oklahoma City earned its 25th straight win over Central Christian since first meeting back in 2018. 

WHAT'S NEXT   

The two teams will meet twice more tomorrow Saturday, Feb. 24 for another doubleheader at Ann Lacy Stadium with game one starting at 2 PM and game two to follow.
