Gordon gathers 19, Flying Queens run away with win over Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball team dropped its first conference game since Nov. 21 in the 77-52 loss to Wayland Baptist on Saturday.

STAT OF THE GAME: Oklahoma City swatted away eight shots on Saturday afternoon as Jerney Bennett garnered five of them while Cacie Gorman added three of her own. 

FIRST QUARTER: Oklahoma City struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening minutes seeing a three and a half minute scoring drought allowing Wayland to a 15-3 start. The Stars closed the gap going on an 8-2 run where Jerzie Bryant and Brooke Curry cashed in threes bringing to 17-13 at the end of the period. 

SECOND QUARTER: OCU capped off its 14-2 run tying the game at 17-17 with 8:22 to play. The Flying Queens turned right back around with a 12-0 run of their own as another scoring drought for the Stars lasting over four minutes putting them in a hole that became tough to dig out of. With a last second layup, Wayland Baptist snatched its biggest lead of the quarter at 38-25 as Amaya Gordon and Jerney Bennett were the only Stars to score in the quarter.

THIRD QUARTER: Wayland Baptist continued to stretch its lead taking its advantage up to 22 points while holding Oklahoma City to its lowest scoring quarter of just 11 points as Gordon led the way with seven. 

FOURTH QUARTER: The Flying Queens snatched its largest lead of the night at 63-38 as the Stars could not break the 20-point margin for the rest of the way. Despite its deficit, Oklahoma City garnered its highest scoring period with 16 points in the final quarter as Gordon came with five points while Cacie Gorman scored four to go along with four rebounds. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City suffers its first loss over the last four conference games moving to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in SAC play. 
  • Amaya Gordon tied a game-high with 19 points while coming up with eight rebounds tabbing her eighth straight game with double-digit points being her 11th time over 12 games this season to do so. 
  • Jerney Bennett notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds while continuing her block party with five swats on the night. The freshman's five blocks is the fourth straight game she has posted five or more and the eighth time with at least four. 
  • Wayland Baptist edged out Oklahoma City 28-24 in points in the paint while the Flying Queens grabbed 15 second chance points to the Stars 14. 
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City will take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa next Friday at 7:00 PM.
