Bennett's big day on the boards shattered by MACU late run

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball team took the number 18 Mid-America Christian Evangels down to the wire before MACU pulled away late for a seven point win on Saturday afternoon inside Abe Lemons Arena.

STAT OF THE GAME: Jerney Bennett had a big day on the boards grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds tying the most in a single game since 2021 when Abby Seltzer hauled in 19 of her own against Langston on Nov. 20, 2021. 

FIRST QUARTER: The Evangels got off to a strong 7-0 start to open play before OCU scored its first point on a 1-of-2 try from the free throw line by Jerney Bennett with 4:18 left in the period. Brooke Curry cashed in a three with 3:55 to play standing as the last basket Oklahoma City could convert while MACU scored just one point in the final two and a half minutes of action seeing the quarter come to and end with an 8-4 Evangel lead. 

SECOND QUARTER: Oklahoma City captured its first lead on a Jerzie Bryant three-point play while the two teams struggled from the field during the quarter.as MACU faced a scoring drought of six minutes and 17 seconds allowing Oklahoma City to reach a lead of 19-11 with Amaya Gordon and Jerney Bennett splitting for six points each in the quarter as the Stars took a 19-15 lead into the half. 

THIRD QUARTER: OCU held its lead for almost eight minutes into the third period before a 7-1 MACU run tied the game at 29 all with 2:14 to play. Oklahoma City swung right back with a 6-2 of its own as Amanda Sene Da Cruz scored five points over a minutes time to help maintain the Stars lead heading into the final quarter. 

FOURTH QUARTER: Mid-America Christian took back the lead at the 4:19 mark for the time since midway through the second quarter as back=to-back Evangel threes gave MACU a four point lead with 2:31 to play. Gordon cut the defcit back down to two with 1:29 left however that would be the final OCU basket of the day as MACU closed out the afternoon on a 6-0 run to earn a 53-45 victory inside Abe Lemons Arena.

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City drops its second straight game and falls for the third time over the last four contests as the Stars move to 5-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. 
  • Amaya Gordon led the game with 19 points as the senior nailed her second three-pointer of the season while grabbing six rebounds. 
  • Oklahoma City sank three shots from range coming from Gordon, Amanda Sene Da Cruz who swished in her first three of the year as well as Brooke Curry
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City finished up its 2024 schedule on Saturday and willl get back into action on Jan. 2 against Texas Wesleyan at 6:00 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
