Gordon shines, Cudjoe knocks down game-winner in overtime victory over John Brown

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Women's Basketball team knocked off John Brown in an overtime thriller on Tuesday night winning 65-61 in its final game before Thanksgiving break to kick off a five-game home stand.

STAR OF THE SHOW: Amaya Gordon reached a new season-high of 27 points on Tuesday night while grabbing a season-best 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Gordon hauled in double-digit rebounds for the third time this season while scoring in double-figures for the fifth consecutive game and eighth time over nine games this season. 

STAT OF THE GAME: The team tied its season-high in blocked shots with 12 on the night making it back-to-back home game with strong defensive showcases after the Stars swatted 12 swats away last Thursday against Langston. 

FIRST QUARTER: Oklahoma City got off to a hot start from beyond the arc hitting three of its first four field goals from downtown to go ahead 11-1 as Brooke Curry nailed a pair of threes while Amaya Gordon knocked down her first triple of the season. After the Stars went up 13-1, JBU stormed back with a 10-0 run before the period finished with an OCU lead of 15-11. 

SECOND QUARTER: The Stars saw its highest scoring quarter of 19 points come in the second behind a scorching effort from Gordon who delivered 10 points in 10 minutes while hauling in seven boards. The Golden Eagles were held to just nine points in the quarter after two separate scoring droughts of almost three minutes. Jerney Bennett and Gordon scored the last eight points for OCU to take a 14 point lead into the halftime break as the freshman Bennett came away with six points and two blocks. 

THIRD QUARTER: OCU came out struggling from the field in the third quarter scoring its first basket at the 7:04 mark before its second make came with 3:43 to go. Back-to-back threes from John Brown cut the deficit back down to six points before the Stars went back up by double-digits at the end of the quarter on a putback following an offensive rebound by Victorio Ososonya. 

FOURTH QUARTER: John Brown continued to work its way back with its best quarter of the night outscoring OCU 18-8 in the period. The Golden Eagles went on to nail three straight threes to tie the game at 50-50 with 1:38 left to play as neither side could go ahead and take the lead forcing the game into overtime.

OVERTIME: Oklahoma City entered its first overtime contest of the season as John Brown continued to fire away from deep taking its first lead of the night at 55-52. Curry knocked down a big three to tie things back while John Brown regained its lead of 57-55. From that point on John Brown was shutout the rest of the way for the final 2:40 of the contest while Gordon tied the game back up with 2:25 to go. Under 30 seconds to play Oklahoma City had possession as freshman Imani Cudjoe pulled from the nail to hit the clutch two for her first basket of the night. Gordon sealed the game with a pair of free throws that out things on ice giving OCU a 61-57 overtime victory. 

GAME NOTES
  • Oklahoma City earns its second straight victory winning back-to-back games for the second time this year to move to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. 
  • Jerney Bennett continued her block party once more with five on the night tabbing her fifth game this season with four or blocks. Bennett added 12 points 6-of-6 shooting from the floor reaching double-figures for the seventh time this season. 
  • Stars sharpshooter Brooke Curry knocked down four treys on the evening on six attempts to tie Bennett for the second-most points with 12. Curry knocks down at least three shots from beyond the arc for the second game in a row notching her fourth game this season with three or more threes. Curry saw action in 45 minutes of play, never leaving the floor through the overtime contest. 
  • Cacie Gorman hauled in the second -highest rebound count behind Gordon with seven while swatting away three Golden Eagle shots. 
  • The Stars tied its season-high in three pointers made with five as Curry provided four of them while Gordon pitched in with her first of the season coming in the first quarter. 
  • Oklahoma City allowed just 12 points in the paint to its own 24 while leading with 16 points off turovers. 
NEXT TIME OUT: Oklahoma City will pick up play over the weekend against Columbia College on the road Saturday, Nov. 30 at 3:00 PM in Columbia, Mo.
