PIEDMONT, OKLA. - The Oklahoma City baseball team earned the series sweep on Monday afternoon as
Hunter Lenochan scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to capture a 4-3 win against LSU-Alexandria.
Oklahoma City 4, LSU-Alexandria 3
Top Performers
Trent Kiraly – 3-4, 2B, R
Connor Ferguson – 5.1 IP, 5 H, R, 2 SO, BB
Chad Pike - W (1-0), 1.0 IP, 3 SO, 0 R, BB
Neither team saw a runner reach second base through the first three and a half innings as both starters mowed down each side's lineup until Oklahoma City (3-0) struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With two on and one out
Barrett Daniel laid down a bunt to move the two runners but an errant throw by the Generals first baseman allowed both runners to score as Daniel made it all the way around to third.
LSU-Alexandria (0-3) saw just two hits through the first five innings before getting on the board for the first time as Cade Labruyere singled through the right side to cut the Stars lead in half at 2-1.
The Generals capitalized on their lead in the top of the eighth inning by scoring two runs to take a 3-2 lead as Zach Mengarelli drove in Julian Kliebert with a sacrifice fly to left before Blaise Foote gave LSU-A the lead scoring Labruyere.
In the top half of the ninth inning, LSU-Alexandria looked like it was going to add a handful of insurance runs with runners on second and third with nobody out.
Chad Pike came out of the pen to save the day for the Stars striking out three and earning the win by keeping the Stars deficit at just one.
The bottom of the ninth got off to a good start for OCU as
Heath Brown and
Hunter Lenochan drew back-to-back walks as the two Stars represented tying and winning runs. After
Noah Kang flew out for the first out of the inning,
Hunter Brown drew the third walk of the inning, which loaded the bases.
To the plate came
Aiden Alexander who pulled up a perfect squeeze play opportunity laying down a bunt single to tie the game and keep the bases loaded.
With the winning run 90 feet away and bases juiced, OCU's hottest hitter came to the plate. After going 6-for-8 in the doubleheader yesterday
Darian Duhon looked to put the game to bed and walk it off for the Stars. Duhon however wasn't able to leave as Generals reliever Colin LaCombe was struggling to find the zone and threw a pitch to the backstop which scored Lenochan from third to solidify the walk-off for the Stars and earn a series sweep.
Connor Ferguson got the nod as Monday's starter for Oklahoma City as the senior right-hander went 5.1 innings while refusing to allow any LSU-A runners to reach second base through the first five innings. Ferguson left the game in the sixth and finished his solid day on the mound with just one run allowed and two strikeouts.
Trent Kiraly became the only Star to provide multiple hits as the senior finished a 3-for-4 day with one double and one run scored. Kiraly's three hits made up half of the OCU knocks as
Aiden Alexander,
Barrett Daniel, and
Noah Kang all joined in with singles of their own.
After being swept by the Generals a season ago, Oklahoma City captured its revenge with a sweep in the opening series bringing the all-time series to a 4-3 advantage for OCU.
Oklahoma City will be back on the diamond at Jim Wade Stadium this coming weekend with a three-game series against Clarke University starting at 12 & 2:30 on Friday (Feb. 2) before a nine-inning series finale on Saturday (Feb. 3).
