Stars eliminate Southwestern Assemblies of God 17-6

OCU, Science & Arts meet for SAC Tournament title 1 p.m. Monday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University trounced Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 17-6 on Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.  

The Stars (29-19) square off with Science & Arts, ranked 25th in the NAIA, for the SAC Tournament title 1 p.m. Monday at Bill Smith Ballpark in Chickasha, Okla. Oklahoma City piled up six first-inning runs.  

OCU advanced to the conference tournament championship game for the fifth consecutive time. The Stars meet Science & Arts for the third year in a row in the SAC Tournament championship contest. Oklahoma City owns 13 SAC Tournament titles. 

With the bases loaded, Hunter Lenochan smacked a triple into left-center field to clear the bases and put the Stars ahead 6-0 with two outs in the first. OCU scored first when Trent Kiraly lined a run-scoring base hit to right-center field. 

Felix Chenier-Rondeau drove in the Stars' second run with a single to right. Jesse Fonteboa also reached home plate on an error. 

Southwestern Assemblies of God plated five runs in the bottom of the first, but OCU responded when Tristan Williams belted an RBI double deep in right field near the foul line in the third.  

In the sixth, the Stars added three runs. Lenochan had an RBI single into left-center. Fonteboa doubled to the wall in left to plate another run, then Kiraly knocked in another run on a hit to right near the first-base line.  

OCU accumulated four runs in the seventh and four in the eighth. Williams drove in runs on a double in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth. Reese Ratchford ripped a solo blast beyond the left-field wall to put the Stars on top 14-6 in the seventh. 

Connor Ferguson collected the victory after taking the mound in the fourth. Ferguson, a junior right-hander from Garden City, Idaho, studying marketing, worked the final 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Ferguson (3-0) allowed three runs on six hits. Andrew Limbaugh pitched the first 3.1 innings. 

The Stars tallied 15 or more runs for the fifth time and compiled 15 or more hits for the sixth instance this year. Williams, a senior from Southlake, Texas, majoring in business administration, knocked in a career-high five runs while going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Lenochan, a sophomore business administration major from Edmond, Okla., accrued a career-high five RBIs in a 2-for-4 showing and scored twice. 

Kiraly, a junior from Farmington, N.M., studying finance, had a season-best four hits while going 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Rondeau, a junior psychology major from Blainville, Quebec, Canada, went 3-for-5 and scored three runs with an RBI.
