YUKON, Okla. – Oklahoma City University crushed Texas A&M-San Antonio 11-2 on Monday evening at Yukon Field in the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
Brooklyn Mason knocked in a season-high three runs, while Kamryn Garvie hit a home run to boost the fifth-ranked Stars. Oklahoma City (46-9) faces Midland (Neb.) at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
OCU reached double digits in runs scored for the 18th time this year. The Stars tallied four runs in the second inning to break away from a 1-1 tie.
Carlee Mollet of the Stars grounded a two-run base hit beyond the second baseman Peyton Vasquez with no one out in the second inning. Grace Pollon scored on Kaitlyn Jones' bunt, and Rally Radacy lined an RBI single to left field to put OCU ahead 5-1.
Garvie ripped a solo blast over the wall next to the scoreboard in left-center field leading off the third. Mason nailed an RBI double just fair near the foul line in left. Mason reached home plate as Pollon got thrown out at second base attempting to steal.
In the fourth, Mason pounded a two-run single to center with two outs. Kaylee Witte tacked on a run-scoring pinch-hit single.
Shelbey Cornelson took the victory for the Stars, moving to 26-2 on the year. Cornelson, a senior exercise science major from Tuttle, Okla., struck out four in five innings. She retired Yaya Jones on a fly ball to right to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.
Mason, a senior nursing major from Lone Grove, Okla., posted a 2-for-2 day with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Garvie, a junior from Edmond, Okla., majoring in university studies, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Radacy, a sophomore from Lookeba, Okla., studying exercise science, added a 2-for-3 showing with a run scored and a run driven in.
