OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University derailed Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 9-0 on Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Eli Davis hurled seven-plus shutout innings, while Jesse Fonteboa crushed a home run to spark Oklahoma City (16-16, 8-5 Sooner Athletic Conference) against Southwestern Assemblies of God, ranked 24th in NAIA baseball.
OCU improved to 6-4 against ranked opponents this season. Davis, a senior left-handed criminal justice major from Shawnee, Okla., blanked Southwestern Assemblies of God through 7.1 innings. Davis (7-2) struck out seven while allowing four hits and five walks.
Noah Kang and Jordan Hanes combined with Davis on the shutout. Kang finished the eighth, while Hanes pitched a scoreless ninth.
Fonteboa, a senior exercise science major from Las Vegas, pounded a fly ball that cleared the left-field wall with two out in the third inning, putting the Stars ahead 3-0. Fonteboa crushed his fourth home run of the year and homered for the second consecutive game after hitting one against Sterling (Kan.) on Tuesday in Sterling, Kan.
Oklahoma City took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trent Kiraly and Reese Ratchford scored when shortstop J.V. Verdin committed a throwing error.
The Stars scored four runs in the fourth inning. Hunter Brown started a string of three consecutive RBI singles by bunting for a hit along the first-base side on a squeeze play. Hunter Lenochan and Aiden Alexander added run-scoring base hits. Fonteboa smacked a deep fly ball to right-center field to bring home another run.
In the sixth, Fonteboa knocked in a run with base hit to shallow left field. In the seventh, Ratchford drew a bases-loaded walk.
Fonteboa posted a 2-for-4 night with three RBIs and a run scored. Lenochan, a sophomore business administration major from Edmond, Okla., went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Stars finish up the series against Southwestern Assemblies of God with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
