SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University boasted of the team title in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's track & field championships over the weekend at Glenn W. Black Stadium.
Oklahoma City had the most points with 199 in the first SAC Championships since 2014. The Stars snagged the top two finishers in the 5,000 meters as OCU won six events.
OCU's Louise Cocking and Ginger MacInnis-Pierce finished 1-2 in the 5,000 meters, while Shawna Smith took the 400 meters. The Stars won the 4x800-meter relay, shot put (Daryn Batts), discus (Morgan Lucas) and javelin (Fiona Wilson).
"Our women had a phenomenal day led by our field events crew," Oklahoma City coach Frezer Legesse said. "It took a lot of back and forth gutsy competitions, but it was great to see them bring home the conference title."
Five Stars landed runner-up finishes – Pierce (5,000 meters), Cocking (10,000 meters), Batts (hammer throw), Cailen Jolley (800) and Stephanie Towle (heptathlon). OCU's third-place finishers were Smith (100 and 200), Pierce (1,500 and 10,000 meters), Batts (discus), Kaylee Clark (400 hurdles) and the 4x400-meter relay.
Cocking, a junior from Derbyshire, East Midlands, England, outlasted the 5,000-meter field with a time of 18 minutes, 31.45 seconds. Pierce, a sophomore exercise science major from Oklahoma City, had the No. 2 time of 19:01.42.
Smith, a sophomore nursing major from Del City, Okla., bolted to the win in the 400-meter dash in 58.08 seconds.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the Stars' Erika Pena, Cocking, Florencia Cabrera and Jolley had the top time of 9:29.44.
Batts, a junior psychology major from Dallas, had the winning throw of 40 feet, 9¾ inches in the shot.
Lucas, a freshman nursing major, threw the discus 126 feet, 4 inches for the win.
Wilson, a senior exercise science major from Greenland, Ark., heaved the javelin 105 feet, 8 inches.
