Stars topple Science & Arts 9-4

OCU comeback bid stalls in 10-9 setback in game 2

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University secured the series victory over Science & Arts with a 9-4 win Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.

Oklahoma City's rally fell short in a 10-9 loss to Science & Arts, ranked 25th in NAIA baseball, in the late game. The Stars went to 24-18, 14-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

OCU and Science & Arts (28-17, 14-7 SAC) stand tied for second place in the league standings entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Stars and Science & Arts trail Mid-America Christian (35-11, 15-6 SAC) and Texas Wesleyan (32-12, 15-6 SAC) by a game. Mid-America Christian and Texas Wesleyan meet next weekend in Oklahoma City.

In the first game, Trent Kiraly crushed a three-run home run to right-center field to put the Stars ahead for good 4-2 with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.

In the fourth inning, OCU struck for four runs. Chad Pike laid down a bunt that allowed Felix Chenier-Rondeau to reach home plate, while Aiden Alexander also bunted to bring Hunter Lenochan home. Reese Ratchford pounded a two-run blast beyond the left-field wall to give Oklahoma City an 8-2 cushion.

Kiraly smacked an RBI single through the middle of the infield in the sixth for the final margin. Kiraly, a junior finance major from Farmington, N.M., provided OCU with four RBIs, a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored.

Ratchford, a freshman from Sulphur, Okla., posted a 3-for-4 showing with two RBIs and a run scored, while Tristan Williams, a senior business administration major from Southlake, Texas, went 2-for-3.

Tyler Polk delivered his third complete-game outing in as many starts. Polk, a senior right-handed criminal justice major from Duncan, Okla., owns victories in all three of those starts. Polk (3-2) struck out four in seven innings Saturday.

Game 2 ended as the Stars had the tying run on third base and winning run on second. In the bottom of the seventh, OCU sliced their deficit to one run on Ratchford's sacrifice fly to right.

Oklahoma City cut its deficit to 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth. Williams poked a run-scoring base hit to left after the Stars scored on grounders by Jesse Fonteboa and Kiraly.

The Stars took a 5-4 lead in the fourth. Aiden Alexander nailed a two-run triple into left field. Ratchford drove in the go-ahead run on a base hit to right.

Science & Arts plated five runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Peyton McDowall put the Drovers on top with a two-run double and hit a two-run homer to give Science & Arts a 10-5 advantage.

Ratchford came up with a 3-for-4 outing with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Fonteboa, a senior from Las Vegas, studying exercise science, drove in three runs while going 2-for-4.

Chad Pike, a senior business administration major from Watermill, N.Y., went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Alexander, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., majoring in exercise science, came through with a 2-for-4 showing with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Andrew Limbaugh took the loss. Grant Harrison, Noah Kang and Ratchford completed the game on the mound.

Oklahoma City completes the regular season against Central Christian (Kan.) with the first game of the three-game set 6 p.m. Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
