OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University tees off in the Kyle Blaser Invitational at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.
The three-round tournament will include shotgun starts both days on the par-72, 5,918-yard course. The event features the Stars, ranked third in NAIA women's golf, and Oklahoma Christian, ranked 20th in NCAA Division II.
Oklahoma City owns four victories on the season with the most recent coming in the Las Vegas Shootout on Feb. 20-21 in Boulder City, Nev. The Stars posted a seventh-place showing in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on March 12-14 in Sevierville, Tenn., to finish ahead of six NCAA Division I teams.
Maddi Kamas topped OCU with an 11th-place finish in the Nichols Intercollegiate. Kamas, a sophomore accounting major from Kingfisher, Okla., turned in a 71-80-76–227 at Sevierville Golf Club on the par-71, 5,803-yard Highlands Course. She sank four birdies and an eagle with two birdies coming in the final round.
Kamas became three-time national golfer of the week and six-time Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week following the performance. Kamas has carded 73.71 strokes per round on the season. She took her fourth career individual title in the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial on Sept. 12-13 in Springfield, Mo., becoming the first Star to win against an NCAA Division I field since 2013-14.
Paige Wood has supplied OCU with a 74.87 scoring average with two victories. Wood, a sophomore broadcast journalist major from McKinney, Texas, tied for 28th in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.
In last year's Blaser Invitational, Oklahoma City won the team title by 21 shots. Kamas became the individual medalist by nine strokes.
The tournament has been named after the Stars' first women's golf coach, Kyle Blaser. The program began in 2000-01 and finished as NAIA runner-up in '01 under Blaser. OCU has taken eight NAIA women's golf championships in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2017.
From 1996-2019, Blaser directed Oklahoma City to 11 NAIA men's golf championships, more than any coach, 20 conference titles and 119 tournament wins. He has been inducted into the OCU Athletics Hall of Fame, NAIA Hall of Fame and the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.
Gaillardia Country Club's golf course was designed by award-winning course architect Arthur Hills. Hills is known for his natural approach, reputation for being environmentally friendly and unwavering commitment to excellence. The golf course opened in July 1998. Gaillardia, located at 5300 Gaillardia Boulevard in Oklahoma City, hosted the 2001 and '02 Senior Tour Championships. Gaillardia's French-Normandy-style clubhouse has been recognized as one of the top 100 clubhouses in the world.
