OCU competes in Red Dirt Classic at Hall of Fame Stadium

Top-ranked Stars meet Ottawa at 2 p.m. Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University comes back to Hall of Fame Stadium in the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic hosted by Langston this weekend.

The Stars, top-ranked in the NAIA, square off with Ottawa (Kan.) at 2 p.m., then Arkansas Baptist at 7 p.m. Friday. OCU faces Oklahoma Wesleyan at 2 p.m., and Benedictine (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hall of Fame Stadium, regarded as the top facility for softball in the nation.

OCU (10-4) captured its 11th national championship last season. Oklahoma City coach Phil McSpadden, who owns 1,853 career wins, notched career victory No. 1,850 against Friends (Kan.) 4-1 on Feb. 25 at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Sooner Athletic Conference boasts of two of the top three teams in the preseason NAIA poll – No. 1 OCU and third-ranked Science & Arts, who is also in the Red Dirt Classic.

Oklahoma City played its home games at Hall of Fame Stadium from 1993-2007 until Ann Lacy Stadium was constructed prior to the 2008 season. Hall of Fame Stadium was the site of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament until 2013 and the NAIA Championships in 1988.

Hall of Fame Stadium has been the host of the NCAA Women's College World Series since 1990, and the tournament is scheduled to remain in Oklahoma City until 2035. Other major softball events that come to Hall of Fame Stadium include the World Cup of Softball, the Border Battle, the USA Softball 18U GOLD National Championship and the USA Softball Slow Pitch Championship Series. The facility has been renovated extensively over the years.
