OCU at Southwestern Assemblies of God women's basketball preview

Stars travel to Texas for first of two SAC matchups in DFW area

THE MATCHUP 

• Oklahoma City University begins a two-game women's basketball road swing through the Dallas area against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 
• Both teams were originally scheduled to play Thursday, but those games have been moved to Monday. OCU now plays at North Texas Dallas at 5 p.m. Monday, while Southwestern Assemblies of God meets John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Monday 

ABOUT THE STARS 

• The Stars ripped Central Christian (Kan.) 84-69 on Jan. 28 in McPherson, Kan. OCU (10-10, 7-8 SAC) scored the game's first 14 points and raced out to a 33-11 lead after one quarter  
Annilia Dawn, a 5-foot-5 senior psychology major from Amarillo, Texas, boasted of her career highs with 27 points and six 3-pointers. She shot 10-for-17 from the field and 6-for-13 from beyond the 3-point arc while notching five rebounds and five assists. Dawn turns in 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.75 steals per game in 2022-23 
Fiona Wilson, a 5-9 senior from Greenland, Ark., studying human performance, posted 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. She sank 4 out of 5 from 3-point range. Wilson provides 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds a game this season 
• OCU shoots 33.2 percent from 3-point land to rank 37th in the NAIA this season 
• The Stars took the seventh spot in the preseason Sooner Athletic Conference coaches poll. Oklahoma City has seized 20 SAC regular-season championships and 12 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City owns 26 appearances in the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament with nine national championships won in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 with four national runner-up finishes (2003, 2004, 2005, 2019) 
• Oklahoma City has gone 17-1 vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God all-time. The Stars rolled to a 76-59 win on Dec. 8, 2022 at Abe Lemons Arena. Dawn spearheaded OCU with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists 

ABOUT THE LADY LIONS 

• Southwestern Assemblies of God absorbed an 85-58 loss to 17th-ranked Texas Wesleyan on Jan. 28 in Fort Worth, Texas. Southwestern Assemblies of God (6-16, 3-13 SAC) failed to score until the 7:10 mark of the first quarter 
• Rylee Lavender, a 5-9 junior, had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. She averages 11.9 points and 3.0 rebounds a game this season 
• Southwestern Assemblies of God took the ninth slot in the preseason SAC coaches poll 

MEET THE COACHES 

Kris Seigenthaler (first year at OCU) 

Kris Seigenthaler assumed the OCU head-coaching job after spending the last four years at Loyola (La.) as an assistant coach. Loyola made four national-tournament appearances with four 20-win seasons and twice sweeping the Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles  
• Seigenthaler has had coaching stops as an assistant at Auburn University at Montgomery (Ala.), Faulkner (Ala.) and Shorter (Ga.). While at Auburn Montgomery, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association included Seigenthaler among its rising stars in the coaching profession on the Thirty Under 30 list.  
• Seigenthaler began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Shorter following a playing career at the University of Montevallo (Ala.) 

Michael Sons (19-45, third season with SAGU)   

• Career spans 25 years mainly in the Christian school environment; he came to SAGU having had a long and successful career as a high school and AAU coach   
• While coaching in four different states, Sons has amassed over 520 wins at the high school level, received a State Coach of the Year award, Region Coach of the Year award and numerous District Coach of the Year accolades
