OCU at Mid-America Christian women's basketball preview

Stars close out regular season with showdown against No. 24 Mid-America Christian

THE MATCHUP 

• Oklahoma City University squares off with Mid-America Christian in the regular-season finale  
• The Stars could secure either the seventh or eighth seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament. The SAC Tournament quarterfinals will happen Feb. 23 on campus sites throughout the league hosted by the top four seeds  
• Mid-America Christian is set to be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament 

 ABOUT THE STARS 

• The Stars fell 61-53 to Southwestern Christian on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla. OCU (12-14, 9-12 SAC) sliced its deficit to 39-36 with 3:43 left in the third quarter after falling behind by 15 early on 
Elaine Witt, a 5-foot-5 sophomore nursing major from Dale, Okla., delivered career highs with 19 points and six 3-pointers. Witt shot 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. Witt turns in 7.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game this season 
Amaya Gordon, a 5-6 junior from Ardmore, Okla., studying criminal justice, filled the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Gordon supplies OCU with 10.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.58 steals a game this season 
• The Stars took the seventh spot in the preseason Sooner Athletic Conference coaches poll. Oklahoma City has seized 20 SAC regular-season championships and 12 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City owns 26 appearances in the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament with nine national championships won in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 with four national runner-up finishes (2003, 2004, 2005, 2019) 
• Oklahoma City has gone 31-3 against Mid-America Christian over the years. The Stars rallied for a 73-71 win Jan. 14 in El Reno, Okla., for the Evangels' last loss. Fiona Wilson's free throws capped a fourth-quarter 9-0 run where OCU seized the lead 63-57 with 3:34 remaining 

ABOUT THE EVANGELS 

• Mid-America Christian came back for a 72-59 win over John Brown (Ark.) on Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark. The Evangels (23-4, 17-4 SAC) took their 10th consecutive victory while shooting 55.5 percent in the second half 
• Aneli Thomsen, a 5-10 senior, had 20 points and three steals. She averages 6.8 points and 2.0 rebounds a game this season 
• Mid-America Christian took the third spot in the preseason SAC coaches poll 

MEET THE COACHES 

Kris Seigenthaler (first year at OCU) 

Kris Seigenthaler assumed the OCU head-coaching job after spending the last four years at Loyola (La.) as an assistant coach. Loyola made four national-tournament appearances with four 20-win seasons and twice sweeping the Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles  
• Seigenthaler has had coaching stops as an assistant at Auburn University at Montgomery (Ala.), Faulkner (Ala.) and Shorter (Ga.). While at Auburn Montgomery, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association included Seigenthaler among its rising stars in the coaching profession on the Thirty Under 30 list.  
• Seigenthaler began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Shorter following a playing career at the University of Montevallo (Ala.) 

Hannah Moeller (153-56, seventh season at MACU)  
• Moeller led the Evangels to their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title and NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2020-21  
• In 2021-22, Mid-America Christian posted the best record in program history with a 28-5 mark  
• Three-time National Christian College Athletic Association national coach of the year honoree while guiding Mid-America Christian to back-to-back NCCAA national titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19

• Alex Freedman will perform the play-by-play for Mid-America Christian. Freedman is the regular play-by-play announcer for the Oklahoma City Dodgers
