OCU falls in double overtime semifinal affair to USAO

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars women's soccer team hosted its first semifinal match since 2018 as 90 minutes were not enough to decide the winner as USAO came out on top 1-0 in double overtime contest.

First Half      

Hallie Crom came out on the attack with two early shots as one of the attempts came on goal to get the semifinal matchup started. The Drovers went to Alicia Rey early and often as Rey took three of the Drovers eight first-half shots with all three on goal. Neither side could break through as both defenses clamped down in the first half as time expired with no score. 

Second Half  

USAO controlled a lot of the possession in the second half as the Drovers sent 13 shots and seven on-goal attempts to the Stars way however OCU keeper Gemma Harvey was on her game all night long and rejected any opportunity the Drovers had. OCU found its best opportunity in the 59th minute with the ball being inside the six-yard box and multiple Stars surrounding it. However, OCU couldn't get a foot on it and missed its chance to take the lead. In the 76th minute, USAO got its best opportunity of the night as Harvey was pulled away from the goal and Rey had a clear chance to score however a dribbling error forced a shot to go off the right post and the Drovers came up empty. With less than two minutes to go, Rey lined up for a free kick just outside of the box to deliver one last chance to break the scoreless tie. Rey sent a hard shot in but it went straight into the hands of Harvey and as time expired 90 minutes came out to be not enough to decide this semifinal. 

Overtime 

The first overtime consisted of almost all of the possession being controlled by USAO. The Drovers took four shots in the first overtime period as two attempts came on goal but Harvey stood her ground and saved both attempts. OCU was unable to gain possession as the Stars went without a shot in the overtime period the 100 minutes through no score remained. 

Double Overtime

In the second overtime period, Science & Arts finally broke the scoreless tie as the conference's goal leader Alicia Rey netted the game-winner in the 103rd minute of play. Oklahoma City could not overcome the Drover lead with little time left and the Stars saw their tournament run come to a close in a double overtime 1-0 loss. 

   

GAME NOTES  

  • Oklahoma City attempted eight total shots with four coming on goal however could not get off a shot in extra time. The Drovers took 27 shots seeing 15 shots on goal.
  • Abby Russell led the way for the Stars with three shot attempts and two on goal while Hallie Crom took two shots and had one on-goal attempt. 
  • Gemma Harvey had an outstanding night in goal as Harvey crushed her second record with 14 saves for the match. Harvey's save total is the most from an OCU goalkeeper since 2019 set by Nadine Steinerwho notched 14 saves against USAO. 
  • OCU's tournament run comes to an end as USAO will move on to face John Brown in the championship game. 
  • The Stars won 11 games for the second consecutive season as OCU finished the 2023 season 11-6-1 and hosted its first semifinal-round match since 2018.
