LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oklahoma City University came up empty through two duals in the NWCA National Duals after falling to Central Methodist (Mo.) 28-18 on Friday at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
Oklahoma City, ranked 15th in NAIA women's wrestling, took on a pair of ranked teams. Central Methodist has the 10th spot in the latest poll, and No. 2 Grand View (Iowa) won 32-13 against the Stars (3-2). OCU faces 11th-ranked Iowa Wesleyan at 9:30 a.m. CST (10:30 a.m. EST) Saturday.
Sophia Smith notched a pair of victories against ranked individuals. Smith, a junior philosophy major from Janesville, Wis., posted a 4-2 win over Catharine Campbell from Grand View and a win 4-4 vs. Corinne McClure of Central Methodist. Smith owns the eighth spot in the 130-pound NAIA rankings, while Campbell is No. 4 at 123, and McClure stands 18th in the 130-pound ratings.
Avery Ashley delivered a fall against Grand View's Cailin Campbell in 1:21 in the 116-pound contest. Ashley, a freshman university studies major from Lucas, Texas, holds the sixth slot at 123 among the NAIA rankings, while Cailin Campbell is fifth at 123.
Against Central Methodist, Irene Sanchez pinned Anyha Cain in 2:22 to cut OCU's deficit to 23-18 with the 191-pound match remaining.
