OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took down Wayland Baptist (Texas) 28-19 on Tuesday at Jaguar Arena.
Avery Ashley and Alana Garcia delivered pins to pace Oklahoma City. The Stars, ranked 15th in NAIA women's wrestling, moved to 5-3 this season.
Garcia, a freshman from Moriarty, N.M., started the dual with a fall in 1:52 against Maya Conde at 101 pounds. Garcia made her OCU debut.
Ashley, a freshman university studies major from Lucas, Texas, stuck the pin in 2:36 vs. Tess Barnett at 123 pounds. Ashley, ranked sixth among NAIA 116-pounders, improved to 17-3 in 2022-23. Ashley collected her seventh fall of the season against Danyl Pippin in 1:11 in an exhibition match.
At 155, Destiny Lyng of the Stars came through with a 17-7 technical-fall win over Alexandria Hernandez. Lyng, a graduate student pursuing a master's in non-profit leadership from La Mesa, Calif., owned an 11-3 advantage after one period. Lyng, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA's 143-pound ratings, went to 10-6 this season.
Oklahoma City's Iby Garcia won 11-8 against Mia Arceneaux at 116 pounds. Garcia, a freshman business administration major from Las Vegas, improved to 9-4.
The Stars face Texas Woman's at 6 p.m. Monday in Denton, Texas.
