OCU faces Grambling at 11:30 a.m. Friday

3/2/2022 2:15:00 PM

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University once again competes at Hall of Fame Stadium, the country's top softball facility, in the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic hosted by Langston this weekend.

Oklahoma City played its home games at Hall of Fame Stadium from 1993-2007 until Ann Lacy Stadium was constructed prior to the 2008 season. Hall of Fame Stadium was the site of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament until 2013 and the NAIA Championships in 1988.

Three ranked NAIA teams will be among the tournament field – No. 3 Science & Arts, fourth-ranked OCU and seventh-ranked Ottawa (Kan.). The Stars meet Grambling at 11:30 a.m. Friday in their first matchup with an NCAA Division I team since squaring off with Abilene Christian on March 18, 2014 in Abilene, Texas. OCU faces McPherson (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday on the OG&E Stadium Field.

The Stars enter the event with a 13-0 mark after sweeping a pair from Science & Arts on Tuesday in Chickasha, Okla. OCU coach Phil McSpadden notched his 1,800th career victory Feb. 19 in Chickasha, Okla.

Tickets to the Red Dirt Classic cost $15 for a day pass or $25 for the weekend pass.

Hall of Fame Stadium has been the host of the NCAA Women's College World Series since 1990, and the tournament is scheduled to remain in Oklahoma City until 2035. Other major softball events that come to Hall of Fame Stadium include the World Cup of Softball, the Border Battle, the USA Softball 18U GOLD National Championship and the USA Softball Slow Pitch Championship Series. The facility has been renovated extensively over the years.

The weather forecast includes high temperatures between the lower to upper 70s with winds 20-25 mph. The chance for rain is 2-6 percent.
