OCU at Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

Stars challenge 12th-ranked Wayland Baptist

THE MATCHUP 

 
• Oklahoma City University meets Wayland Baptist (Texas), ranked 12th in NAIA women's basketball, in the Stars' first encounter with a ranked team this season
• OCU was scheduled to play Wayland Baptist on New Year's Day before that contest was lost due to health and safety protocols 

ABOUT THE STARS

• The Stars dumped North Texas Dallas 72-40 on Jan. 29 at Abe Lemons Arena. Oklahoma City (14-7, 9-7 SAC) held UNT Dallas to season lows by an OCU opponent in points, field-goal percentage (20.3 percent), 3-point shooting percentage (10.0 percent), field goals (12) and 3-pointers (two) 
Abby Selzer, a 6-foot-2 senior from Thomas, Okla., put together 19 points and seven rebounds. She hit 9 of 10 field-goal attempts in 19 minutes of play. Selzer produces 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.47 blocks a game with the top field-goal percentage by an individual in the NAIA this season (67.0 percent). She has posted 1,595 points and 697 rebounds in her illustrious career 
Erika Ankney, a 5-9 senior from Harrah, Okla., supplied the Stars with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. She knocks down 39.7 percent of her 3-point shots in 2021-22. Ankney totals 17.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.73 steals per game 
• The Stars sink 17.5 free throws on average to rank fifth in the NAIA this season 
• Oklahoma City has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019)  
• The Stars took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 251-29 (.896 winning percentage) in conference play 
• Oklahoma City leads the overall series 40-32. Wayland Baptist benefited from a forfeit win in the game scheduled Jan. 1 in Oklahoma City. Before then, Wayland Baptist ousted the Stars from the SAC Tournament with an 88-63 semifinal win Feb. 26, 2021 in Plainview, Texas. Ankney had 18 points, five rebounds and three steals 

ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS
 
• Wayland Baptist overpowered Langston 95-76 on Jan. 29 in Plainview, Texas. The Flying Queens (22-3, 14-2 SAC) poured it on in the fourth quarter, reeling off a 23-4 run to open the last period 
• Kaitlyn Edgemon, a 5-11 redshirt freshman, had 35 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Edgemon averages 15.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.57 blocks per game this season. Edgemon became the SAC player of the week after a week that included a triple-double against Central Christian (Kan.) on Jan. 27  
• Kaylee Edgemon, a 5-11 senior, delivered 33 points, eight rebounds and three blocks against Langston. She records 18.9 points and 6.3 rebounds a contest 
• The Flying Queens rank in the top 10 nationally in average field goals (fifth, 31.0 per game), points (seventh, 83.1), assists (seventh, 18.8) and field-goal attempts (seventh, 70.5) 
• Conference coaches installed Wayland Baptist as the preseason favorite to win the SAC, naming the Flying Queens No. 1 on nine ballots 

MEET THE COACHES 
 
Brett Tahah (19-5, second season with OCU) 
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program 
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances 
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles  
Jason Cooper (first season at WBU) 
• Compiled a 413-133 record as a high school coach in West Texas. Led Sudan girls to 2009 Texas State Title 
• Also an active coach in club and AAU basketball, claiming four national crowns and four more national runner-up titles
