Stars strive to gain split of season series with Texas Wesleyan

THE MATCHUP


• Oklahoma City University tips off the final week of the regular season in a Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball contest against Texas Wesleyan
• The Stars finish the regular season with road contests at Texas Wesleyan and Science & Arts. OCU currently stands tied for sixth in the league standings
• The SAC Tournament will include all 12 conference teams. The first round would be Feb. 22 with seeds 5-8 hosting and the top four seeds idle. The quarterfinals are set for Feb. 24 with the top four teams hosting the first-round winners
 
ABOUT THE STARS 

• OCU came through with a 77-72 overtime victory against Southwestern Christian on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (15-10, 10-10 SAC) remained undefeated on the season in overtime games (3-0) with both wins over Southwestern Christian reaching the extra period
• Abby Selzer, a 6-foot-2 senior from Thomas, Okla., propelled Oklahoma City with 24 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals on 10-for-13 shooting from the field. Selzer has accumulated 1,672 points and 731 rebounds during her career to hold seventh on the Oklahoma City all-time scoring list. Janeth Torijano (1987-91) ranks sixth in scoring in OCU history with 1,682 points, while Lauren Gober (2009-13) is fifth with 1,687. Selzer produces 18.6 points and 10.1 rebounds a game and tops the NAIA with 67.6 percent shooting from the floor this season
• Annilia Dawn, a 5-5 senior from Amarillo, Texas, collected 20 points, five rebounds and 11 assists. Dawn had her highest scoring output since providing OCU with 22 points at Langston on Jan. 22. She turns in 12.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest on the season
• OCU stands No. 4 in the NAIA this season in free throws hit per game (17.5)
• OCU has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019) 
• The Stars took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 252-32 (.887 winning percentage) in conference play
• Oklahoma City leads the overall series 19-1. The Stars took a 57-50 win Jan. 28, 2021 in Oklahoma City as Selzer fueled OCU's effort with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Texas Wesleyan collected a forfeit win from OCU for the contest originally scheduled for Jan. 13 due to health and safety concerns

ABOUT THE LADY RAMS

• Texas Wesleyan crushed Central Christian (Kan.) 102-59 on Tuesday in McPherson, Kan. The Lady Rams (21-5, 15-5 SAC) reached 100 points for the first time since a 104-68 win over Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) on Jan. 3, 2017. Texas Wesleyan has its first 20-win season since 2012-13
• Zarria Carter, a 6-1 freshman, had 20 points and three rebounds while shooting 8-for-10 from the field. Carter averages 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.75 steals a game
• Texas Wesleyan ranks third nationally with 17.8 free throws made and 25.3 free-throw tries per game
• The Lady Rams received votes in the latest national poll
• League coaches placed Texas Wesleyan at ninth in the SAC during the preseason
 
MEET THE COACHES

Brett Tahah (20-10, second season with OCU)
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles 

Brenita Jackson (first year with Texas Wesleyan)
• Brenita Jackson most recently served as assistant coach at Little Elm High School (Texas)
• As head coach at Lon Morris (Texas), she led the team to a single-season school record for wins with a 19-12 record in 2010-11. Jackson became NJCAA Region XIV coach of the year after guiding San Jacinto (Texas) to a 23-9 mark and the program's first national ranking in 2014-15. San Jacinto had been 3-27 the previous season
• Jackson became an all-conference recipient at both Louisiana and Lon Morris during her college playing career
