OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University opened the season with a victory over Schreiner (Texas) 25-11 and Jarvis Christian (Texas) 34-5 on Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena. 

Against Schreiner, Avery Ashley, Sophia Smith and Irene Sanchez provided falls for OCU, ranked 16th in NAIA women's wrestling.

Ashley, a freshman from Lucas, Texas, finished off Allicia Mahoe in 1:32 in the 116-pound in Ashley's college debut.  

Smith, a junior from Janesville, Wis., ended the 130-pound bout in 1:49 with her pin of Maranela Garcia. 

Sanchez, a junior from Madrid, Spain, pinned Sympanie Sampson in 3:45 in the 170-pound contest.  

Against Jarvis Christian, Sanchez posted her second win of the day. Sanchez won in a technical fall against Natalie Bryant.  

The Stars face Texas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
