WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma City University boasted of winning five events in the Wichita Frostbite Regatta on Sunday at the Little Arkansas River.
The Stars became victorious in the men's open single, men's open pair, men's open four, men's open double and men's open eight. Oklahoma City placed among the top three in the men's open novice four, women's open single and women's open double.
Andrija Simeunovic hauled in the win in the men's open single to highlight three Stars who finished as the top placers in the event. Simeunovic, a senior from Zemun, Belgrade, Serbia, majoring in computer science, completed the 1.7-mile head race in 9 minutes, 42.9 seconds. OCU's Aidan Moriarty finished second place with a time of 9:46.4, while Kyle Brown clocked a 10:01.7 mark. Seven Stars entered the event.
In the men's open pair, OCU had three of the top four finishers. Brown, a freshman from Sydney, studying exercise science, delivered the winning mark of 9:03.3. Keaton Knopp came in second with a time of 9:20.5, and Taylor Broussard took fourth with a 10:11.7.
The Stars grabbed two of the top three spots in the men's open four. Simeunovic manned the stroke seat for Oklahoma City's crew which snagged first with a time of 8:26.8. Elias Dahl held the stroke seat as the Stars grabbed third with an 8:43.5.
In the men's open double, Moriarty, a sophomore from Middleton, Wis., studying pre-engineering, won the event with a time of 9:03.6. OCU's Corban Melder collected fifth, while Jack Fruehwirth was seventh.
Oklahoma City captured the men's open eight event with a 7:48.2, finishing 32.5 seconds ahead of Colorado. Simeunovic sat in the stroke seat.
The Stars posted second-place showings in the women's open single and the men's open novice four. Ruthie Lacy, a junior nursing major from Oklahoma City, produced a time of 10:34.7 to place second in the single. In the novice four, OCU snared second with a 9:46.6.
Oklahoma City picked up third in the women's open double with a 11:35.5. Laura Muse sat in the stroke seat.
The weather conditions started out with a temperature in the low 40s. The temperature rose to the mid-60s with winds that blew between 5-15 mph as the day wore on.
The Stars return to the Oklahoma River in the Opening Day Regatta on March 17-18.
