OCU at Southwestern Christian women's basketball preview

Stars put 5-0 road record this season on line Saturday

THE MATCHUP


• Oklahoma City University aims to remain undefeated on the road this season in an away women's basketball contest against Southwestern Christian
• Both teams enter the matchup with 4-4 marks in the Sooner Athletic Conference this season

ABOUT THE STARS 

• Mid-America Christian knocked off Oklahoma City 71-53 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (9-4, 4-4 SAC) shot a season-best 90 percent (18-for-20) from the free-throw line, but Mid-America held OCU to its season lows in field-goal percentage (23.1 percent) and 3-point shooting (16.1 percent)
• Fiona Wilson, a 5-foot-9 junior from Greenland, Ark., led OCU's efforts with 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. She turned in season highs for rebounding and blocks and tied her season best with six made free throws. Wilson provides the Stars with 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest
• Jordyn Eaton, a 5-10 senior from Byng, Okla., posted season highs with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists while shooting 3-for-4 from 3-point range and beyond the free-throw line. She had career highs in points, assists and 3-pointers. Eaton contributes 3.1 points and 1.5 assists a game
• The Stars rank No. 2 in defensive rebounds per game (33.7) and fourth in free throws made a game (17.8) among the NAIA this season
• OCU has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019) 
• The Stars took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 246-26 (.904 winning percentage) in conference play
• OCU tops the series against Southwestern Christian with a 17-0 all-time mark. The Stars rolled to an 88-57 win over Southwestern Christian on Feb. 23, 2021 at Abe Lemons Arena in the SAC Tournament. Abby Selzer recorded 21 points and five rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor

ABOUT THE LADY EAGLES

• Southwestern Christian eased past Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 72-56 on Monday in Waxahachie, Texas. The Lady Eagles got 16 points from their bench unit. Southwestern Christian (9-5, 4-4 SAC) collected a forfeit win against John Brown (Ark.) in a game originally set for Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
• Thamires Andrade, a 5-10 senior, had 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Andrade averages 21.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.00 steals per game while hitting 50.5 percent of her shots from the field this season
• SAC coaches projected Southwestern Christian to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason
 
MEET THE COACHES

Brett Tahah (14-5, second season with OCU)
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles 

Mark Arthur (96-93, seventh season with Southwestern Christian)
• Southwestern Christian took a program-best third-place finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament last season with an 80-65 win over Concordia (Mich.) on March 20, 2021 in Winona Lake, Ind.
• Arthur previously coached the Southwestern Christian men's basketball program to a 404-329 record in 20 years until he stepped down to become full-time athletic director in 2012. Arthur, who played basketball for Southwestern Christian, restarted the basketball program with him as head coach in 1992-93
• In 2008, the court in Pickens-Springer Gymnasium was named 'Mark Arthur Court' in recognition of Arthur's achievements at SCU. He was inducted into the SCU Hall of Fame in 2013
