OCU shuts down Viterbo 10-0

Stars notches first whitewash of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University walloped Viterbo (Wis.) 10-0 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked 16th in NAIA baseball, went to 5-5 on the year. OCU fell to Mount Mercy (Iowa) 3-1 on Saturday morning.
Against Viterbo, Dalton Reed launched his team-leading sixth home run of the season, and the OCU pitching staff combined on a one-hit shutout.
Reed put the Stars on the scoreboard with a solo blast to left field leading off the second inning.
In the fourth, Oklahoma City produced a six-run inning. John Anthon sparked the uprising with a bases-loaded walk. Jared Hazeldine followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring in another run.
Gunner Halter knocked in two more runs with a base hit to center field. Cross Factor and Bryson Lierle pounded run-scoring doubles as OCU went ahead 7-0.
In the fifth, Peyton Crispin nailed a two-run double, while Factor lined a base hit up the middle to drive in another run.
Collin Hucke accounted for Viterbo's only hit against OCU in the second. Tanner Sparks (3-0) kept Viterbo to that one hit through four innings. Sparks, a junior right-hander from Shawnee, Okla., struck out nine.
Only one runner reached scoring position for Viterbo. OCU retired the final 15 Viterbo batters in order. Grant Harrison worked the fifth and sixth, while Anthony Kopecky pitched the last inning. Harrison, a junior from Jones, Okla., fanned five and struck out the side in the sixth.
OCU's Fredric Walter, a senior from Montigny, France, went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
The Stars' rally fell short against Mount Mercy. OCU had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Lierle smacked a solo shot to left to cut the Stars' deficit to 3-1. Crispin singled and reached second base on a steal.
Tanner Schoeninger struck out four in four innings. Schoeninger, a senior righty from Fort Collins, Colo., shut the door on a bases-loaded opportunity for Mount Mercy in the second. Chris Bennefield fanned four over the last three innings.
Oklahoma City faces Viterbo at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
