Stars bring experience into 2020-21

OCU opens season 1 p.m. Wednesday in Wichita, Kan.

WICHITA, Kan. – New Oklahoma City University coach Billy Martin will have a veteran women's soccer squad to work with.
Martin took over from Brian Harvey, who retired after last year after 34 years as OCU coach. Harvey had been the only coach the program had.
Martin returns to the Stars after spending six years as coach of Rose State (Okla.). Martin is well acquainted with OCU after serving as Harvey's assistant for 19 years prior to becoming a head coach. Martin is an OCU alum.
Madi Caputo will anchor the Stars. Caputo is a two-time all-Sooner Athletic Conference performer. OCU features six seniors, who along with Caputo led the Stars to the 2018 SAC regular-season championship.
The Stars get 2020-21 started against Central Christian (Kan.) at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.

TOP RETURNERS

• Caputo, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., has garnered two first-team all-conference nods from her midfield spot. Caputo has provided the Stars with 17 goals, 12 assists, 46 points and 10 winning goals during her career
• Hailey Terrell, a senior from Austin, Texas, became a second-team all-SAC defender as a sophomore. Terrell has produced five goals, an assist and 11 points while starting 43 matches for Oklahoma City. Terrell's father Tony starred on OCU's 1991 and '92 men's basketball national championship teams
• Bailey Webb, a senior from Oklahoma City, has made 45 starts among her 49 appearances with OCU. She has contributed eight goals, five assists and one winning score

NEW FACES

• April Hill nabbed honorable-mention NJCAA all-American, Region II most valuable player and first-team all-region for Rose State last season. Hill, a junior from Portsmouth, Petersfield, England, notched 17 goals, eight assists, 42 points and five game winners. Rose State is coached by OCU alum Tommy Riley
• Sofia Carvajal Granados took first-team all-region for Rose State in 2019. Granados, a junior from Bogota, Colombia, scored 17 goals playing alongside Hill
• Paige Graham and Josie Knox played key roles for Rose State's defense last season. Graham, a junior from El Reno, Okla., made 20 starts and helped limit opponents to a 0.67 goals-against average. Knox, a junior from Edmond, Okla., had a 0.93 goals-against average as a goalkeeper for Rose State

PRESEASON BUZZ

• SAC coaches named OCU fifth in the preseason league poll. The Stars took five fourth-place votes

MEET THE COACH

• Martin guided Rose State to a 74-35-2 record with four NJCAA Region II regular-season championships and two tournament titles. Martin was Rose State's first coach
• Martin has mentored youth talent on the high school and club soccer levels. Martin has been Bishop McGuinness High School's head coach as well as Oklahoma Football Club and Edmond Soccer Club coach. Martin took Oklahoma Soccer Association coach of the year in 2009 after leading his boys team to the state title
• Martin played an integral part on OCU's first team to reach the national tournament in 1991, picking up six goals, five assists and 17 points from 1989-91. Martin also played professionally

MARK ON YOUR CALENDAR

• The Stars' home opener is against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brian Harvey Field
• Other scheduled OCU home matches are 5 p.m. March 20 vs. Southwestern Christian and 5 p.m. March 27 against preseason conference favorite USAO
• The SAC Tournament starts April 1 with quarterfinal contests, followed by semifinals April 5 and the championship April 8. All matches will be hosted by the highest seeded team
