OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University extended its winning streak to five games with a 76-62 win over John Brown (Ark.) in Sooner Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Â
John Brown (5-7, 2-3 SAC) led 26-20 at the 7:07 mark of the second quarter before OCU (9-1, 4-1) went on a 16-9 run to take a 36-35 halftime lead.
Â
The Golden Eagles took a brief lead early in the third quarter before senior center
Abby Selzer provided the Stars a 39-38 lead on a lay-up and subsequent free throw at the 8:11 mark. OCU would not trail again in the game with the lead growing to as many as eight points and shrinking to as few as two points in the third quarter.
Â
Senior guard
Annilia Dawn pushed the Stars to their first double-digit lead, 61-50, with a stop-and-go lay-up at the 9:03 mark of the fourth quarter. JBU would get no closer than seven points the rest of the contest.
Â
The Stars limited the Golden Eagles offense to 24 of 65 shooting (36.9%) for the game. The Star defense was particularly stingy in the fourth quarter, with JBU making only five of 17 (29.4%) field goal attempts.
Â
After committing 13 turnovers in the first half, OCU settled down and only committed three turnovers in the second half. The Stars finished with a 53-32 rebounding edge. The plus-21 rebounding margin is the second highest against an opponent this season, behind a 57-31 margin in a win over Wiley College.
Â
Senior guard
Erika Ankney finished with a team-high 20 points and three steals for OCU. Two Stars finished with double-doubles, with junior guard
Paige Pendley finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Selzer contributing 13 points, 11 rebounds and a team-high three blocks. Pendley made four of eight 3-point attempts.
Â
Dawn finished with nine points and season-high eight rebounds.
Â
OCU returns to action on Saturday for a non-conference match-up with Red River Athletic Conference foe Paul Quinn College. Tip-off against the Dallas-based HBCU is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Abe Lemons Arena.
