KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City toppled Hastings (Neb.) 27-22 on Saturday in the Avila Eagle Duals at the Mabee Fieldhouse.
The Stars collected four dual victories in the tournament, blanking Avila (Mo.) 39-0, prevailing over Benedictine (Kan.) 27-18 before rolling to a 34-9 win over Central Methodist (Mo.). Oklahoma City owns a 6-1 season mark with an unbeaten dual record against NAIA men's wrestling competition this season.
Jack Kitchingham delivered a fall against Henry Jones in 6:42 in the 285-pound match to secure the win against Hastings, ranked 12th in the NAIA. Kitchingham, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., helped OCU complete a rally from a 22-9 deficit. Hastings gave up forfeits in the 184-pound and 197-pound bouts.
Jaxen Gilmore handed the Stars their other win against Hastings. Gilmore, a senior from Yukon, Okla., took a 5-0 win over Riley Dement at 149 pounds. Oklahoma City became the only team to go undefeated in the Eagle Duals.
Against Benedictine, Connor Holman and Jon McGowan struck for consecutive pins to fuel Oklahoma City. OCU evened the score 12-12 when Holman pinned Daryl Easterling in 2:14 in the 157-pound match. McGowan finished off Giovanni Bruno in 3:40 at 165 pounds to put the Stars ahead on the scoreboard.
The Stars came up with four falls against Benedictine. OCU took the early lead with Cooper Mahaffey's pin of Charles Easterling in 2:17 in the 125-pound contest. Easton Rendleman, ranked seventh nationally at 197 pounds, clinched the win with a fall vs. Caiden Casella in 2:35.
OCU posted two bonus-point victories against Central Methodist. Gilmore stuck the fall against Cameron Perry in 42 seconds in the 149-pound match. Kolbe Madron turned in a 12-1 win over Kolby Conkins at 174. Holman, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., edged Dylan Washburn 3-0 at 165 pounds, and Rendleman, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., fended off Devin York 6-3 at 197.
OCU collected the 10th shutout in program history against Avila and first blanking since a 55-0 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Nov. 1, 2019 in Bartlesville, Okla. The Stars racked up five bonus-point victories.
Mahaffey, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., sparked Oklahoma City with a fall over Ethan Moses in 2:45 at 125 pounds. Casey Goss earned a 15-0 technical-fall win against Michael Crowder at 141, while Drake Vannoy routed Christian Knighton 16-0 in the 157-pound match. Rendleman nabbed a 14-5 win over Nathan Coley at 197.
Rendleman completed a 4-0 day with a fall, a forfeit and a major-decision win. Rendleman improved to 9-1 with three pins on the season. Gilmore went 3-0 Saturday to move to 7-5 this season, and Holman recorded a 3-0 mark in the dual tournament to go to 5-5 in 2021-22.
The Stars wrestle next in the Oklahoma Wesleyan Duals at 9 a.m. Jan. 11 in Bartlesville, Okla.
