OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University has landed two athletes on the 2021 All-Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Team with sophomore midfielder Tommaso Belli earning first-team honors and senior forward Lucas de Freitas earning second-team honors.
Â
Belli led the Stars in goals (14), assists (8) and total points (36). He ranked second in the SAC in points per game (2.25), fourth in goals per game (.875) and shots on goal per game (2.13) and fifth in assists per game (.5). Belli also led the conference with six game-winning goals.
Â
De Freitas, who earned first-team and SAC Newcomer of the Year honors last season, concludes his two-year OCU career with 24 goals. He finished second on the squad in goals (11) and total points (25) this season while placing seventh in the conference in goals per game (.688), ninth in shots on goal per game (1.44) and 10th in points per game (1.56).
Â
Head coach Billy Martin says that it is a well-deserved honor for both players. He believes Belli is a tremendous all-around talent who should also garner All-American honors. Â
Â
"I believe Tommaso is the best player in the Sooner Athletic Conference," Martin began.
Â
"Not only are his offensive stats impressive but he is also one of the best defenders in the midfield in our conference. The way he reads the game offensively and defensively makes us such a better team. Tommaso brings a great energy to training and really loves the game of soccer. He definitely deserves All-American honors."
Â
Martin says that de Freitas is also a special talent whom he believes was undervalued as a second-team selectee.
Â
"The SAC has some great forwards but I believe Lucas should have been named to the first team. I love watching him play, he is such a creative player and scores goals from nothing. Another player who truly loves playing the game and brings an exceptional attitude to practice," Martin said.
