OCU at Central Christian women's basketball preview

Stars hit road for their conference opener

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University will face Central Christian (Kan.) in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Thursday evening
• OCU holds an 8-0 advantage in the all-time series against Central Christian. All games in the series have been double-digit wins for the Stars with the smallest margin of victory being a 75-59 win at Abe Lemons Arena on Jan. 4, 2020
• OCU ranked third and CCCK ranked 12th in the SAC Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll

ABOUT THE STARS 
• The Stars routed Champion Christian (Ark.) on Nov. 6 at Abe Lemons Arena in their most recent outing. OCU is off to a 3-0 start to the 2021-22 season. OCU has out-rebounded its opponents 153-105 this season
Abby Selzer, a 6-foot-2 senior from Thomas, Okla., notched her third double-double in three contests with 22 points and 14 rebounds Nov. 6. Selzer ranks leads the team and SAC while ranking eighth in the NAIA in rebounds per game (12.7). The consensus two-time All-American has 556 career rebounds for the Stars. Selzer also leads the squad and ranks third in the SAC with a 19.3 points per game scoring average
Erika Ankney, a 5-9 senior from Harrah, Okla., posted 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals against Champion Christian. She ranks first on the squad in assists per game (5.6) and second in points per game (15.7)
Annilia Dawn, a 5-5 senior from Amarillo, Texas, contributed 14 points, five assists and three steals in OCU's last game. She has made an immediate impact in her first season as a Star. The transfer from Butler ranks third on the squad with a 13.7 points per game scoring average. She has also contributed 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks
• Oklahoma City ranks first in the NAIA in free throws made per game (21.3) and ninth in free-throw percentage (80 percent, 64 of 80). The Stars also place amongst the nation's best on the boards, ranking second in defensive rebounds per game (36.3), eighth in total rebounds per game (51.0) and ninth in rebound margin (16.0)
• OCU received votes in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released on Nov. 17. Oklahoma City has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019) 
• OCU took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 242-23 (.913 winning percentage) in conference play
• The Stars crushed Central Christian 92-58 on Jan. 23 in McPherson, Kan., in the most recent meeting between the two schools. Ankney provided OCU with 18 points and six assists

ABOUT THE LADY TIGERS

• Central Christian collected its first victory of the season 50-41 over Ozark Christian (Mo.) on Tuesday at Alexander Arena. The Lady Tigers were off to a 0-5 start this season
• Cheyenne Marshall, a 5-9 senior, had 15 points and six rebounds. Marshall has averaged 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season
• CCCK's last winning season was in 2008-09 (17-14) and its last season reaching double-figures in wins was 2009-10 (12-17)
• League coaches placed Central Christian at 12th in the preseason conference poll
 
MEET THE COACHES

Brett Tahah (8-1, second season with OCU)
• Tahah is the first former OCU player to serve as head coach of the program
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles 

Matt Barreiro (first season at Central Christian)
• Takes over at CCCK after serving as men's and women's basketball head coach at The King's University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for seven years
• Prior experience gained as women's assistant coach at Anderson University (NCAA D III), St. Ambrose University (NAIA) and Hannibal-LaGrange University (NAIA)
