Stars wallop Central Christian 92-58

OCU gives Tahah her first win coaching Stars

McPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University notched a season-opening victory 92-58 over Central Christian (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena.
Brett Tahah collected the win in her first game as OCU head coach. Andi Pierce, a senior from Garber, Okla., powered the Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA women's basketball, with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Oklahoma City boasted of five who scored in double digits. Erika Ankney, a junior from Harrah, Okla., posted 18 points, six assists and three steals, while Abby Selzer, a junior from Thomas, Okla., added 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Stars.
Mallory Lockhart, a junior from Keller, Texas, accumulated 12 points and three assists, while Selena McDonald, a junior from Elgin, Okla., chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks for OCU. Lockhart canned 4 of 9 3-point shots as the Stars sank 11 treys. Ankney, Pierce and Payton Taylor each downed two 3s.
OCU raced out to an 11-0 advantage fueled by Lockhart's three 3-pointers. Central Christian (2-9, 0-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) missed its first four shots from the field. The Stars built first-quarter leads of 18-4 and 23-8.
The Stars took the floor for the first time since the SAC Tournament title game March 7, 2020.
"It was very good to see our team back out on the court," said Tahah, the first former Star to become OCU women's coach. "After only eight days of practice, I was proud of how we competed. We made some adjustments in the second half that allowed us to finish strong. I am excited to see our improvement over the course of the season."
Central Christian cut OCU's lead to 33-31 at the 4:38 mark of the second period. The Stars answered with a 7-2 surge ignited by Selzer's bucket and Ankney's 3.
In the third, OCU opened the second half with an 11-2 run. McDonald scored to give the Stars a 56-38 margin midway through the third quarter. Jordyn Eaton's basket provided OCU its largest lead of the day at 90-51 with 2:15 remaining.
The Stars face Oklahoma Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Monday in Bartlesville, Okla.
