Baseball Sweeps SAGU Behind Offensive Explosion

Stars Pile on the Offense in Routing Lions Twice

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Thursday was a bittersweet afternoon for the No. 18 Oklahoma City University baseball team. Just hours before the Sooner Athletic Conference announced the suspension of the 2020 season due to medical concerns, the Stars took to the field in Waxahachie to battle the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions, and the OCU offense dominated the day.

OCU (17-8, 4-1 SAC) ran their winning streak to five games as the suspension took effect, as the Stars swept a twin-bill from SAGU (18-10, 3-5 SAC) by scores of 12-3 and 16-4.

The Stars got off to a quick start in game one, as Tyler Williams singled home Gunner Halter, and he later scored himself to give OCU a 2-0 lead. SAGU tied the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first, but in the second, OCU took control.

John Anthon and Cross Factor each homered in the frame to put OCU on top 5-0, and in the third, Halter drove in two more runs with a double that pushed the OCU advantage to 7-2. Anthon, Factor, and Williams all homered in the final two innings - with Anthon's second homer of the day being a 3-run shot, and OCU cruised home with the win, 12-3.

Aaron McGeorge (4-1) picked up the complete game victory, surrendering three earned runs on six hits and one walk in the game, and he fanned six Lions. the Loss went to Ben Bills, who was touched up for seven runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.

Anthon was 3-for-4 in the game with two homers, three runs scored, and four RBIs. Factor homered twice in five at bats and knocked in three runs; Williams was 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs; and Halter had four hits including two doubles, and he scored two runs and drove in two more.

SAGU struck first in game two, plating three runs in the bottom of the third, but OCU took complete command of the proceedings in the fourth and fifth frames.

The Stars scored seven runs in both of those innings. In the fourth, Peyton Crispin and Halter each had RBI singles, and Lierle knocked in a run on a double before Dalton Reed broke things open. Reed smashed the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a 3-run homer to cap the 7-run outburst in the fourth. Lierle and Crispin each had run scoring doubles in the fifth, Factor, Noah Barks, and Garrett Horton drove in runs with singles, and Anthon added a sacrifce fly to push OCU's lead to 14-3.

Reed and Seth Jones picked up RBIs in the sixth frame as well, and OCU took the win 16-4.

Jake Patterson (3-2) threw four and one-third innings and allowed three earned runs in the win. Patterson allowed seven hits and one walk, and he struck out six in the game. Agustin Martinez (2-2) gave up seven earned runs on nine hits in four innings and he was charged with the loss.

Halter and Barks each had three hits in the game, and Reed, Crispin, and Lierle had two hits apiece. Williams scored three times, and Halter, Factor, Reed, Crispin, Lierle, and Jared Hazeldine each scored twice. Reed drove in four runs, while Factor, Crispin, and Lierle each knocked in a pair.

The wins come as the OCU season now faces an uncertain future as the Sooner Athletic Conference has suspended play indefinitely effective immediately for all sports. OCU has made a similar decision for all sports on campus. For more information on the suspension, please see the SAC release here.
