No. 3 Softball Runs Winning Streak to four with Pair of Run-Rule Wins at OKWU

Big Innings Help Stars Rout Eagles Twice

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Through the early parts of the 2020 season, the No. 3 Oklahoma City University Stars softball team has hit the ball well and scored runs with relative consistency. At times, though, they have struggled to slow opposing offenses. On Friday, however, they put together both the pitching and the offense and the result was a pair of run-rule wins.

OCU (11-3) scored six runs in two separate innings -one in each game, and they also added a pair of five-run frames, as they trounced the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles (2-10) twice. The Stars won game one 13-1 in five innings, and they took game two 13-4 in six innings.

Neither team really threatened in game one until the top of the third inning when OCU loaded the bases with nobody out on a walk, a bunt single, and a hit batsman. Sarah Fisher followed with a two-run single that plated Nicole Robinson and Kennedy Jackson, and the Stars were off and running. Brooklyn Mason drove in a run with a walk later in the inning, and Lexi Duff cleared the bases with a 3-run double to cap the six-run outburst.

Oklahoma Wesleyan answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but in the top of the fourth, the OCU offense got right back to work. Kaitlyn Jones singled to left as the second batter of the inning, and Jackson raced around to score on an error on the play after she had reached on an error and stolen second base. Mason lofted a sacrifice fly with one away in the inning that scored Fisher, Kelsie Delap singled home Jaden Shores and Baleigh Loux, and Duff knocked in Delap with a base hit to push OCU's lead to 11-1. Shores and Mason added RBIs in the fifth to provide the Stars' final margin of 13-1.

Shelbey Cornelson (1-0) was outstanding for OCU in the circle. The 6-foot freshman from Tuttle, Okla. allowed only one earned run and she scattered six hits in the five-inning complete game. She walked two and struck out seven in earning her first collegiate victory. Abbey Ely (1-5) was tagged for the loss in the game, as she allowed six earned runs on only four hits in two and two-thirds innings.

Fisher was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs in the game, Mason drove in three and scored one without the benefit of a hit in the game though she did walk twice, and Duff singled and doubled in three at bats with four RBIs.

The Stars got things rolling early in game two as Fisher smacked her first homer of the season with two out in the top of the first to give OCU the 1-0 lead. Jones drove in Jackson with a sacrifice fly in the third to double the OCU lead, and in the fourth, OCU broke things open. Amy Crabaugh doubled in Taylor Pike to set off a six-run frame that pushed OCU's lead to 8-0. Robinson, Jackson, Fisher, and Shores all had RBI hits in the frame, and Loux and Fisher executed a double steal that allowed Fisher to score.

Oklahoma Wesleyan scored two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the OCU lead to 8-4, but in the top of the sixth the OCU offense roared to life again. Jackson knocked in Shores when she reached on an error, and Mason scored on a passed ball to put OCU up 10-4. Fisher Singled home two more runs, and she and Jones pulled off another double steal that saw Jones bring home the 13th and final run of the day for OCU, as the Stars won game two 13-4.

Christie Betker (3-2) earned the win in the circle for OCU, throwing six innings and yielding four runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Tahlor Stefek (0-1) allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in three and two-thirds innings in the loss for Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Fisher was 3-for-5 in game two with two more runs and four RBIs - giving her a total of seven RBIs on the day. She doubled, homered, and stole two bases in the game as well. Jackson was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Shores was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and Crabaugh doubled, walked, scored a run, drove in another and stole two bases.

OCU will jump back into Sooner Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they head to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the Rams of Texas Wesleyan University (3-11, 1-1 SAC). The double-dip is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
