Baseball Splits DH with MidAmerica Nazarene

10th-Ranked Stars Walk-off in Game one, Pioneers Take Game 2

OKLAHOMA CITY - After weather resulted in a schedule change this weekend, the No. 10 Oklahoma City University Stars baseball team took the field at Jim Wade Stadium against the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers. The teams played a double-header on Friday, and the weather - and the games - were brisk.

The Stars (7-7) walked off winners in game one 6-5, while in game two, as the mercury dipped, the Stars' bats went cold and MNU (5-3) took an 8-1 win.

Cross Factor got the Stars off and running with one out in the bottom of the first in game one, ripping a triple to right-center, and two batters later he scored on a wild pitch to give OCU the 1-0 lead. OCU added three runs in the bottom of the second frame, as Gunner Halter and Factor each drove in runs to push OCU's advantage to 4-0.

MNU scored three times with two outs in the fifth, but Aaron McGeorge got out of the jam on a caught stealing and neither team scored again until the seventh.

Halter took over on the mound for OCU for the seventh in search of the save, and he retired two of the first three men he faced, but a hit batsman and back-to-back walks tied the game at 4-4, and an error allowed MNU to take the lead 5-4 headed to the bottom of the seventh inning. Evan Maun led off the seventh with a pinch hit single, and Halter followed with a base hit to put two on with no outs. After a fly out, Tyler Williams walked to load the bases and put the tying and winning runs in scoring position. With Dalton Reed at the plate, a wild pitch allowed pinch-runner Jared Hazeldine to score the tying run. Reed was then intentionally walked, and Peyton Crispin followed by drawing a free pass to force in Halter with the winning run.

Halter (1-0) did not convert the save, but he did get the win, throwing one inning and giving up two runs - one earned - on three walks and a strikeout. Connor Jonas (1-1) took the loss for MNU, lasting just one-third of an inning and yielding two earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Factor was 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and a triple, and he scored a run and drove in another.

OCU threatened to pick up where they left off in the first inning of game two, but after Factor had drawn a free pass, Tyler Williams struck out, and Factor was called out trying to steal second as Williams was ruled to have interfered with MNU catcher Joshaun Sandoval's throw to second. MNU immediately capitalized on the break with a two-out rally.

MNU tallied seven runs in the second inning on five hits -with all of the runs crossing the plate after two men were out, and that proved to be enough for MNU hurler Easten Garrett.

Garrett (2-0) allowed only one OCU run - scored by Crispin on an RBI-double from Dylan Taylor - one three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. Brandon Goldston (2-2) took the loss for OCU, as he yielded seven earned runs on eight hits and four walks in six and two-thirds innings of work. Goldston struck out 10 in the game.

MNU belted three home runs in the game.

The teams will wrap up their three game series with a nine-inning game on Saturday starting at Noon.
