Baseball Takes Final Game of Tennessee Trip

Stars Snap 5-Game Skid Behind Goldston's Complete Game

LEBANON, Tenn. - One of baseball's oldest axioms is momentum is only as good as the next day's starting pitcher. On Sunday, it was Oklahoma City University whose starting pitcher helped break the momentum that had been building against the Stars with a solid performance on the hill at Cumberland University's Ernest L. Stockton Field.

Brandon Goldston tossed a complete game for OCU (6-5) as the Stars snapped a 5-game skid with a 5-3 victory over Cumberland University (1-5) to end a four game weekend trip to Tennessee.

It didn't take OCU long to get on the board, as Tyler Williams clubbed his seventh home run of the season over the right field fence at Woody Hunt Stadium to give OCU the 1-0 lead. OCU doubled its lead in the top of the third frame when Cross Factor scored Noah Barks with a sacrifice fly to center field, but single runs from Cumberland in the third and fourth frames knotted the score at two.

Gunner Halter belted his third home run of the weekend in the top of the fifth to restore the two-run OCU lead at 4-2, and a squeeze bunt from Frederic Walter in the sixth gave the Stars another insurance run.

That was plenty for Goldston (2-1). The senior right-hander from Leedey, Okla., posted his first complete game of the season, tossing seven innings in earning the win. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, he walked only one, and he fanned 10 in the game.

The loss was charged to Cumberland's Nick Hoefling (0-2) who gave up five earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. He did not walk a batter, and he struck out seven Stars.

Bryson Lierle had two singles for the Stars in three at bats, and the homers from Williams and Halter were the only extra base hits of the day for OCU.

The Stars will return home on Wednesday afternoon for a single game against the Tabor College (Kan.) Blue Jays (4-2) The Blue Jays are the third team so far this season the Stars will face who was either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason top-25 poll. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
