Women's Basketball Eliminates Two More from Title Contention with Win over JBU

Stars Improve to 24-0; SAC Mathematically a Two-Team Race with Four Games Left

OKLAHOMA CITY - The top-ranked Oklahoma City University women's basketball team moved to the brink of clinching a share of the regular season championship in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Entering play on Thursday night, four teams remained mathematically alive to grab a share of the crown, but OCU was able, with their win over John Brown University, to eliminate two of those teams, setting up a sprint to the finish line in SAC play.

OCU (24-0, 16-0 SAC) had to grind out the win over JBU (8-16, 4-11 SAC), and that's just what the Stars did, taking the win from the Golden Eagles 62-39.

"It was a good win," coach Bo Overton said after the game. "That's a team that can really make shots, and with the way they stretch us out to the perimeter defensively, it really shows how good Taylor [Sylvester] and Abby [Selzer] are inside. When it came time to execute, though, I thought all five players on the floor executed well, and it got us a win."

The game got off to a sluggish start in the first quarter. The teams combined to miss their first five shots before Erika Ankney broke the ice with two minutes gone in the game. After JBU tied the score on their next possession, OCU rattled off an 8-2 run which was capped by an Ankney 3-pointer that put OCU up 10-4 with 4:24 left in the quarter. The Eagles kept the Stars from pulling away however, and at the end of the first frame, OCU's lead was 16-12.

JBU struck first in the second stanza, but the Stars were able to hold onto the lead, and OCU began to slowly distance themselves. A 3-pointer from Ankney pushed the OCU lead to 19-14, and as the frame wore on, OCU began to have success attacking the rim. Abby Selzer, Brennyn Seagler, and NaShyla Hammons all found buckets in the painter area, and at the break, OCU had stretched their lead to 30-21.

OCU stretched their lead out quickly in the third quarter. The Stars opened the second half on an 11-3 run that pushed their lead to 42-24 with 6:15 to play in the period when Mallory Lockhart connected from deep. The Golden Eagles pulled within 11 points twice late in the frame, but each time OCU answered, the second time on another Lockhart trey that gave OCU a 48-34 lead headed to the final 10 minutes.

In the final frame, OCU shut things down defensively. The Stars held JBU off the scoreboard for the final 3:57 of the contest, and OCU eased out to the 62-39 win.

Selzer notched her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Ankney chipped in 13 in the win. Lockhart finished with nine points, Sylvester grabbed eight rebounds, Hammons had six rebounds, and Sylvester rejected four shots.

OCU made 21 of 47 (44.7%) shots in the game, and six of 16 (37.5%) from long range. At the foul line, the Stars were 14 of 17 (82.4%). The Stars dominated the game in the paint, out-scoring JBU 24-12, and OCU swatted nine shots while JBU did not record a blocked shot.

The Stars will be back in action on Saturday when they conclude their 2020 non-conference schedule. The Stars will hit the road to face former SAC foe Bacone College (3-18) in Muskogee, Okla. at 2 p.m.
