OCU falls to Wayland Baptist 26-18

Watters knocks off top-ranked wrestler

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dropped a 26-18 verdict to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena in a matchup of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA women's wrestling.
Rachel Watters of OCU prevailed over the top-ranked individual at 155 pounds, while the Stars posted two falls. Oklahoma City, ranked 10th, fell to 4-3, while eighth-ranked Wayland Baptist went to 7-1.
Watters, a senior from Ankeny, Iowa, used a four-point move in the second period to upend Kaylynn Albrecht. Although Albrecht tied the match 6-6 with a takedown with 18 seconds left, Watters' four-point sequence provided the tiebreaker. Watters, ranked second in the NAIA at 170 pounds, remained undefeated with a 7-0 record this season.
At 191 pounds, Nkechinyere Nwankwo of the Stars pinned Katerina Peña in 28 seconds. Nwankwo, a sophomore from Houston, holds the No. 1 spot in her weight class' ratings, while Peña entered the night at No. 20. Nwankwo improved to 11-1 on the season.
OCU's Mattison Parker collected a fall against Amanda Alvarado in the 130-pound contest. Parker, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, completed the bout in 1:07. Parker upset Alvarado, the sixth-ranked 130-pounder in the NAIA. Parker stands at No. 20 in the rankings.
Oklahoma City won in three of the five matches contested Friday night before a crowd of numerous alumnae set to recognize OCU's seniors.
The Stars compete in the Women's College Wrestling Championships on Feb. 7-8 in Marietta, Ga. OCU owns four WCWA championships won in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and four runner-up finishes.
