OCU comes in sixth in NWCA National Duals

Nwankwo goes 3-0 this weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oklahoma City University picked up a sixth-place finish in the NWCA National Duals on Saturday at the Kentucky Expo Center.
Oklahoma City, ranked ninth in NAIA women's wrestling, reached the fifth-place dual with a 29-18 victory over eighth-ranked Providence (Mont.). The Stars (2-2) fell to sixth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 30-15 in the fifth-place contest.
Nkechinyere Nwankwo went unbeaten in the NWCA National Duals. Nwankwo, a sophomore from Houston, finished 3-0 in the tournament. Nwankwo gained a forfeit win against Providence, then pinned Olivia Ricci of Wayland Baptist in 53 seconds Saturday. Nwankwo, ranked No. 1 among NAIA 191-pounders, improved to 8-1 on the season.
Against Providence, Monica Mendoza and Destiny Lyng posted falls for the Stars. Mendoza, a junior from Des Plaines, Ill, finished off Alina Kinsey in 34 seconds in the 123-pound match. Lyng, a sophomore from La Mesa, Calif., pinned Gabrielle Hernandez in 4:30 at 136. Cierra Foster and Mariah Lomas from OCU turned in technical-fall wins.
Against Wayland Baptist, Raven Guidry collected a fall. Guidry, a junior from Lafayette, La., tallied the pin over Angelica Garcia in 2:27 at 116 pounds. Mendoza completed a 2-0 day by winning 7-4 over Jasmine Davis.
OCU meets Emmanuel (Ga.) at 1 p.m., then Central Methodist (Mo.) at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 at Abe Lemons Arena. Also that day, Broken Arrow will take on Stilwell in a matchup of girls high school wrestling teams at noon. OCU alumna Cassidy (Jasperson) McAlpin coaches Broken Arrow.
