OCU edges Indiana Tech 17-16

Fifth-ranked Stars bow out of NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oklahoma City University went 1-2 in the NWCA National Duals, edging Indiana Tech 17-16 on Friday at the Kentucky Expo Center.
OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA men's wrestling, fell to second-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.) 24-12 and to 10th-rated Southeastern (Fla.) 33-6. The Stars went to 6-3 on the season in duals.
Easton Rendleman and Chase Vincent of the Stars put together 3-0 marks on the day. Vincent, a junior from Yukon, Okla., prevailed over three ranked opponents – 11th-ranked Scott Sopko from Indiana Tech, No. 3 Cole Tenety of Reinhardt (Ga.) and 14th-ranked Coleman Bryant of Southeastern (Fla.). Vincent is ranked fourth among NAIA 174-pounders.
The Stars nipped Indiana Tech based on the third criteria for breaking ties in duals. OCU advanced past Indiana Tech by combining for more points scored in the dual's matches 46-43.
OCU rallied from a 16-9 deficit in the dual. Rendleman, a sophomore from Choctaw, Okla., picked up an 8-4 win over Josh Hill in the 197-pound bout. The Stars' Gage Johnson took a 12-1 victory over Vernon Willis in the 285-pound contest to tie the dual score 16-16. Vincent clipped Sopko 3-2 in the 174-pound match.
Against Reinhardt, Jon McGowan gutted out a 6-4 win over Nolan Saxton in sudden victory in the 157-pound match. Rendleman knocked off Jacob Henderson, the seventh-ranked 197-pounder in the NAIA, 7-4.
Against Southeastern, two matches were decided in sudden victory while another ended in the first tiebreaker period. Rendleman won 4-2 over Jesse Pryor.
OCU competes next in the Missouri Valley Invitational at 9 a.m. Jan. 18 in Marshall, Mo.
