Stars secure victory at Southwestern Christian Invitational

OCU wins first tournament of the fall

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University improved upon a 25-stroke advantage to win the Southwestern Christian Invitational for the second straight season Tuesday at Lake Hefner Golf Course.
Natalie Gough, a sophomore from Bixby, Okla., finished one shot in front of fellow OCU teammate Lauryn Pritchard to become the individual champion after shooting a 36-38–74 with two birdies and 12 pars. The Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA women's golf, finished ahead of the Oklahoma City Blue Team and the University of Texas at Dallas, who placed second and third, respectively.
OCU shot a combined 287-284–571 in the tournament on the par-72, 5,969-yard course. The field consisted of eight NAIA schools, one Division III and one NJCAA program with a total of 52 players.
Pritchard, a sophomore from Allen, Texas, scored a 34-37–71 with two birdies and 15 pars to secure second place. Lauren Behnken, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., posted a second-round best 34-33–67, burying six birdies on the day to finish in third.
Stars senior Melissa Eldredge tied for fifth place, firing a 34-38–72. Eldredge, of Eufaula, Okla., recorded 14 pars and two birdies. Freshman Adeline Norton landed a tie for 16th place, finishing round two with a 38-38–76. Norton, of Plainview, Okla., registered 13 pars and one birdie.
The Oklahoma City Blue team captured second place at the invitational, shooting a combined 312-293–605 to finish one stroke ahead of the University of Texas at Dallas. Clair Hill, a junior from Gig Harbor, Wash., carded a 33-37–70 for eighth place with seven birdies and seven birdies. Blayne Barker, a freshman from Durant, Okla., posted 40-36–76 to capture 15th with 13 pars and one birdie.
Rachel Eckert, a sophomore from Bixby, Okla., shot a 38-37–75 for a share of 16th place with two birdies and 11 pars, while McKenzie McCoy, a junior from Beggs, Okla., came in 19th place with 36-36–72 card and four birdies. Arianna Medina, a junior from Phoenix, carded a 39-39–78 to tie for 20th place with 13 pars.
OCU's Loren Matrone, a junior from Frisco, Texas, played unattached. Matrone shot a 71 in round two for a share of 11th place.
Oklahoma City's next tournament is Sept. 30 in the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational at the High Meadows Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas.
