SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Oklahoma City University knocked off Valley City State (S.D.) 4-0 on Friday in the NAIA Softball World Series at Killian Complex.
Jaden Shores fired a one-hitter, while Jaci Smith drove in Oklahoma City's winning run on a triple. The third-ranked Stars (58-6) meet second-ranked Marian (Ind.) (54-1) at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday.
Phil McSpadden moved his head-coaching record to 1,724-382 in his 32nd year guiding Oklahoma City. McSpadden owns the most wins in college softball against four-year competition. He has directed OCU to 10 national crowns, 14 national-title game appearances, 30 World Series trips and 13 55-win seasons. McSpadden notched career win No. 1,700 on April 5 in a 5-3 victory over Panhandle State in Oklahoma City. OCU increased its all-time mark in the NAIA Softball World Series to 128-47 in 32 appearances.
"I've always thought the first game at the national tournament is the toughest one," McSpadden said. "Jaden threw well, kept everything down, moved the ball in and out really well but especially in, kept them from turning on stuff. Obviously there wasn't any scoring, but you could tell both teams were tight."
The Stars halted Valley City State's 24-game winning streak. OCU dealt the Vikings (54-4) their first setback since a 7-5 loss to Viterbo (Wis.) on April 13 in Valley City, N.D. The Stars improved to 6-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Shores, a junior from Blanchard, Okla., carried a perfect game through 5.1 innings. Tatum Lundin broke up the perfecto by hitting a double into right-center field with one out in the sixth inning. Shores walked two batters in the seventh inning, but caught Autumn Perry swinging at strike three to clinch the victory.
On the year, Shores owns a 30-4 record. Shores struck out five in her 25th complete-game effort and 13th shutout of the season.
Valley City State's Emilee Wilson held the potent Stars' lineup without a hit until the bottom of the fourth. Kennedy Jackson swatted a base hit to center for OCU's first hit on the day. OCU entered the day leading the NAIA in hits, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, stolen bases, hits per game and runs batted in a game.
Smith crushed a triple into right-center field beyond Lundin, who dove for the ball in center. Jackson sped home on the hit for the only run the Stars needed. Baileigh Loux grounded to shortstop Joelle Aiello, and Smith beat Aiello's throw at home plate for a 2-0 OCU lead. Loux scored on a wild pitch to put the Stars ahead 3-0 in the fourth.
Smith padded her NAIA single-season record totals to 116 RBIs and 113 runs scored.
"The center fielder tried to make a great play," McSpadden said. "You don't blame her at all. The difference in the ballgame might have been a foot. A double, a single I guess, that turns into a triple as a result of the center fielder. You get a lead in a tight ballgame, especially a first-round ballgame, and it makes a difference. Everybody starts relaxing."
Jackson poked an RBI single to right to put Oklahoma City on top 4-0 in the fifth. Sha Ingram, pinch running for Gaby Zucchiatti, reached home plate on the play.
