Stars collect 9-4 win over Texas Wesleyan

Texas Wesleyan wins series with 14-10 victory

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with Texas Wesleyan, winning the first game 9-4 and falling in the second one 14-10 on Saturday at Sycamore Park in a matchup of top 20-ranked teams in NAIA baseball.
Fifth-ranked Oklahoma City went to 30-6, 11-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. No. 17 Texas Wesleyan (30-7, 11-4 SAC) became the first league team to take a series from OCU this year.
In the first game, Caleb Davis drove in the winning runs by belting a sixth-inning grand slam. Davis' seventh homer of the year put the Stars on top 8-3.
Oklahoma City led 3-0 after Peyton Crispin's two-run double along the right-field foul line in the first inning. Bryson Lierle knocked in the Stars' first run of the game with a base hit to right.
Tyler Williams hit an RBI single to left to give the Stars a 4-1 advantage in the second.
Quinton Walbergh pounded a run-scoring double into right-center field to move OCU's lead to 9-4 in the seventh.
Walbergh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., turned in his first 5-for-5 performance with the Stars, reaching home plate three times and driving in a run. Davis, a junior from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Crispin, a sophomore from Lookeba, Okla., posted a 2-for-3 outing with two runs driven in.
Jake Patterson took the win. Patterson, a junior left-hander from Ardmore, Okla., struck out five in 5.2 innings. He went to 6-1 on the year. Tyler Milligan finished the game on the mound, logging the last 1.1 innings and fanning two.
In the second game, Seth Jones' RBI single cut the Stars' deficit to four runs in the seventh. OCU ended the game with the potential tying run on deck.
OCU rallied with three runs in the seventh inning. Lierle smacked a run-scoring base hit to center, and Williams scored on a wild pitch.
The Stars jumped out to 2-0 first-inning advantage. Elliott Cary crushed a solo shot over the center-field fence, while Crispin added a run on a single through the middle of the infield.
OCU mounted a comeback from a 6-2 second-inning deficit. Lierle nailed a solo blast beyond the left-field fence in the third. In the fifth, the Stars cut the Texas Wesleyan lead to 6-5 as Walbergh pounded an RBI single to right. Garrett Horton added a run-scoring base hit to left-center.
Lierle, a junior from Altus, Okla., put together a 2-for-3 batting line with three runs scored and two runs driven in. Cary, a senior from Niceville, Fla., was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Crispin went 2-for-3, knocked in a run and scored a run. Dylan Taylor, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., hit a two-run single in the sixth.
Brandon Goldston went to 5-3 with the loss. Goldston, a junior right-hander from Leedey, Okla., notched a season-high nine strikeouts in four innings. Chris Goldston and Tanner Andrews also pitched for OCU.
The Stars return to Jim Wade Stadium for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against Sterling (Kan.).
