OCU drops SAC Tournament title game to Wayland Baptist 68-62

Kay, Selzer of Stars take all-tournament nods

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short 68-62 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament title game Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City made its fifth appearance in a row and 18th overall trip to the SAC Tournament championship game. The Stars, ranked ninth in NAIA Division I, went to 29-4, while eighth-ranked Wayland Baptist improved to 28-5.
OCU had won the past two SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City captured its 19th SAC regular-season championship to secure an NAIA Division I Tournament berth for the 22nd consecutive year and 25th time overall. National-tournament pairings will be announced 5 p.m. CST March 6. The NAIA Tournament takes place March 13-19 in Billings, Mont.
Abby Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., powered the Stars with 26 points and five rebounds. Selzer and Michaela Kay picked up all-tournament acclaim.
Selzer produced 19.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a contest and a 69 percent field-goal percentage in the tournament, while Kay added 10.0 points and 5.0 assists a game with 44.4 percent shooting from 3-point land. Kay, a senior from Spokane, Wash., became a two-time all-tournament choice. Kay chipped in seven points and five assists Saturday.
NaShyla Hammons, a junior from Oklahoma City, pulled down 11 rebounds, and Taylor Sylvester, a junior from Chickasha, Okla., had four blocked shots for OCU.
Maci Merket supplied Wayland Baptist with 22 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five 3-pointers to snag tournament most valuable player. Wayland Baptist overcame an eight-point second-quarter deficit. The Flying Queens limited their turnovers to seven, the fewest by an OCU opponent this season.
