Stars fall to Bellevue 7-4

OCU trail for first time this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University baseball suffered its first loss of the 2019 campaign, falling to 23rd-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) 7-4 Saturday afternoon at Jim Wade Stadium.
Tyler Williams, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., led the Stars with a 1-for-3 day at the plate with one run scored and a RBI. The loss dropped Oklahoma City, ranked eighth in NAIA, to 8-1 overall. Bellevue improved to 2-4 on the season.
The Bruins got on the board fourth, as their 3-hole hitter knocked a double to left field and three batters Daniel Teasley singled through the left side to bring in the first run. Bellevue added another run a batter later when Cody Banks singled through the right side scoring Chuy Jimenez. two errors on the next play allowed Teasley to come in to score to give the Bruins a three-run advantage after three and a half innings of play.
OCU responded in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double by Quinton Walbergh, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Ty. Williams ground ball to third that was then threw into the first base dugout.
Bellevue scratched across two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Brandon Goldston, a junior from Leedey. Okla., finished his day for the Stars with 5.0 innings pitched, gave up five hits, five runs and struck out five batters. Saturday was B. Goldston's first loss on the mound this year.
Oklahoma City again battled back and was able to cut into the Bruins' lead. The Stars had a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth, getting three runs across when Ty. Williams belted a double into left center that scored Noah Barks, then came into score the next play on a throwing error by the third baseman that allowed Caleb Davis to reach. Peyton Crispin drove in Joseph Garza, who ran for Davis.
Grant Harrison entered in relief of B. Goldston in the sixth innings, giving up two runs in the top of the seventh. Harrison, a freshman from Jones, Okla., gave up three hits and two runs in 2.0 innings of work, striking out three.
The Stars went down in order in the bottom of the seventh. Walbergh, a senior from Edmond, Okla., and Barks, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., finished Saturday 1-of-3 with a run scored.
OCU returns to action at 10 a.m. Sunday for a matchup with No. 21 Central Methodist and then ends the day against Texas A&M-texarkana
at 3:30 p.m. at Jim Wade Stadium.
